Shared this photo while he was blogging from the archives. Of the Canadian Centre for Architecture. I feel no nostalgia for hand drafting tools and in a way architects are becoming more crafty by "making" their own tools i.e. designing scripts, simulations, and so on. Still, there is something to be said of the simplicity of Price...Combinati...

SF Lunchwalk: North, third in a series exploring the city instead of eating lunch. I am exploring north along streets mechanized from below. Gears, pulleys, and cables live under the street, humming and clapping, droning and singing, partaking in the communion of automata. SF Lunchwalk : North. What other machines are driving the city? What Design Sounds Like. In two days I will be presenting at Design Observer's What Design Sounds Like. Conference, held at the School of Visual Arts (logically! In New York. I am excited to be a part of a great group including Nicola Twilley. Who will be talking about sound and food in "Sound Bites", Alexander Chen. Who will be presenting his work on music and code, and numerous others with presentations that sound fascinating. I'll be talking to Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG. Where we encounter forces of c...

SF Lunchwalk: Attack and Decay. The track is unedited. It is simply what I (or the microphones) heard over a 2 minute time-span, using elements of the city (doors cracked open, hills, different sized streets) to "edit" the sound. Walking every week, with every chance I get. My feet vault me out of a sedentary habit ( we are what we repeatedly do. What if it is in use, but for a use not originally intended. As mentioned here from time to time, I represent one third of the experimental collective DEMILIT. We are a group taking walks, recording sounds, and making connections between militarized spaces and the everyday landscape. Last year we were commissioned by Deutchlandradio Kultur to produce a radio piece on their "Newcomer Werkstatt" program, which aired in Berlin at midnight, June 24, 2011. In a related fashion, the military severed the island’s crown in order to install the radar system for the m...

Architecture. Sound is often considered in the no-fi case to be an irritant, to be eliminated if it is to be paid attention to at all. Why bother with engineering an environment for precise listening when the occupant- a passerby on the street, a visitor to your home or office, etc- is not engaged to listen as a concert hall goer might be. The occupant of a no-fi environment must first have a desire to listen. And all manner of things. Moving beyond the metaphor, designing for the sonic environment at la...

I've Barely Been Here. Sound artist Chris Kallmyer created a series of installations at the Headlands Center of the Arts.
