The following is a short list of commonly used items and how long it takes for each to decompose. Banana peel- 3 to 4 weeks. Paper bag- 1 month. Wool sock- 1 year. Tinned steel can- 50 years. Aluminum can- 200 to 500 years (if recycled, only up to 6 weeks! Disposable diapers- 550 years. Plastic bags- 20 to 1000 years. Plastic jug- 1 million years. March 21, 2012.
