Anno Domini 1161 wurde unser Ort als "Tremene" das erste mal urkundlich erwähnt. Schon im Mittelalter entwickelte sich das Dorf zum Knotenpunkt mehrerer Heerstraßen und Handelswege. Vom Rhein über Magdeburg kommend, hatte man am Thyrowberg nahe Tremmen die erste Gelegenheit, diesseits der Havel in Richtung Osten zu gelangen. In einem Zeitungsartikel von 1932 mit dem Titel "Havelländische Seltsamkeiten" ist folgendes nachzulesen: ".In Tremmen findet man eine Seltsamkeit: eine Dorfkirche mit einem Zwiebelturmpaar- die Münchener Frauenkirche im Havelland.". Im Jahr 1794 ergriff ein Feuer von einem benachbarten Hof von den Türmen Besitz, verschonte aber das Kirchenschiff.
