Rachel Waxing Lyrical: Music Monday: what is Oh Land doing in England?
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010/07/music-monday-what-is-oh-land-doing-in.html
Monday, 12 July 2010. Music Monday: what is Oh Land doing in England? I came across Oh Land quite recently on Myspace. There is quite a crop of current Scandinavian bands, from Sweden especially, who I have been following, but Oh Land stands out at the moment. According to her Twitter. She is on her way to England. As far as I know, she hasn't got any gigs planned here. Who is she working with then? Or is she just here for a holiday? 4 Her live show is very theatrical, making use of costumes and projecti...

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: August 2010
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 31 August 2010. Welcome back, and more music. Well, I've made it back on time from my hiatus. I haven't really had time to catch up with what music is red-hot and current right now, so I'll just talk about a band with releases this year, instead. While I was away, I discovered that a single GB of music on a hard drive is not quite enough to keep me occupied for three weeks of work abroad. However, I came to depend on a few songs, and Back To Back by Dusty Brown. 5 This City Is Killing Me is thei...

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: Songs in French
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010/07/songs-in-french.html
Friday, 9 July 2010. This week's vaguely-themed, vaguely topical music post is running under the banner of "songs in French". It was inspired by the first band in question, Cours Lapin. Who I discovered on Line of Best Fit. With their latest single, Cache Cache. You will find a download link there, too. The second Francophone act I wanted to blog about is Chat. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ich bin ein kulturblog. Life and style: Ask Hadley guardian.co.uk. Are ripped designer jeans the new Ugg boot?

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: The WTF Files #1: Forum Fetishism
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010/07/wtf-files-1-forum-fetishism.html
Thursday, 15 July 2010. The WTF Files #1: Forum Fetishism. While trying to think up themes for my weekly token non-music post, I go on forums. I spend far too much time on forums, if I'm honest. After coming up with the idea for "The WTF Files", which was originally going to be me bitching about bands I don't like, I realised there was a whole can of WTF just waiting to be opened in this particular corner of online culture. 1 The Piss Fetishist. 2 The School Tie Perv. 3 The Fart Fantasiser. Obsessed with...

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: May 2010
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, 29 May 2010. Style Inspirations #3: Juliana Hatfield. This picture of Juliana comes from the cover art of her 1994 album, Only Everything. This is the look I spent most of my latter teen years trying for. It's an easy enough look to pull off; the transatlantic indie kid style works for boys and girls, too. It's come-as-you-are in the clothes department, with a little makeup and a great haircut that looks as if you're not trying. (Makeup optional for boys). The album's great as well, by the way.

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: April 2010
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, 29 April 2010. How To Destroy Angels: yes it is Trent Reznor. A six-track EP is pencilled in for the summer and rumoured tracklistings are already floating around. It's not known whether Trent and Mariqueen are recording as a duo, or whether they're part of a larger group, but all will probably be revealed, sooner rather than later. The video shows Mariqueen operating an interesting-looking synth that I would love to have a go on, and is there a hint of heavily-treated vocals there? In 1983....

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: Gig Review: School of Seven Bells, Manchester Ruby Lounge, 19th of July 2010
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010/07/gig-review-school-of-seven-bells.html
Wednesday, 21 July 2010. Gig Review: School of Seven Bells, Manchester Ruby Lounge, 19th of July 2010. Sorry for the missed post earlier in the week - things have caught up with me. Right, now. Where was I? Oh yes, the School of Seven Bells gig I went to on Monday. The set contains songs from both albums, but there are some surprising omissions: Connjur and Prince of Peace do not get an airing. However, the set proper ends with a pretty, note-perfect My Cabal, which leaves the crowd wanting more....ALBUM...

Rachel Waxing Lyrical: Album Review: Best Coast - Crazy For You
http://rachelwaxinglyrical.blogspot.com/2010/07/album-review-best-coast-crazy-for-you.html
Friday, 16 July 2010. Album Review: Best Coast - Crazy For You. Best Coast has kindly put their album online for our streaming pleasure, prior to its release on the 27th. For a reliable UK-friendly stream, go to this Guardian. In some ways, the album is like a plate of biscuits; you know you're going to get a biscuit when you pick one, but will it be a crunchy lo-fi slacker biscuit, or will it be a crumbly, hazy one with lots of reverb? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ich bin ein kulturblog. Album Re...
