Rachel's Reverie: September 2012
http://rachelsreverie.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Random reflections on music, films and books. Sunday, 2 September 2012. Top of their game. Maestro at work: Simon Rattle and the Berlin Phil. WAGNER, SIBELIUS and RAVEL. Berliner Philharmoniker, Sir Simon Rattle. BBC Proms, 30 August 2012. The audience were jostling with nervous excitement as the orchestra stepped on stage, but a calmness fell as the first notes of Ligeti's. The mood changed after the interval, as the Berlin Phil returned with some lively French music, starting with Jeux. Games) — ...

A photo a day for 2010. About this photo blog. Photos of the year. The ones that got away. Twelve Days of Christmas. A theme of this year’s blog has been the long journeys into work, whether winding through the Cotswolds or taking the long motorway drive down through the Midlands. Today will be the last, and it’s marked by the snow in Leamington Spa – roads still slushy and pavements still white from the earlier snow. December 24, 2010 at 9:31 pm. December 23, 2010 at 9:28 pm. Thanks to overnight snow an...

Life as she knows it: April 2011
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Tuesday, 19 April 2011. All of a Hither. Over a year ago I wrote about. Manor House Gardens. OK, not strictly speaking Hither Green, but very very close. The main news: Hither Green now has its very own supper club! I went along to the inaugural Wattleseed supper club. Sticking to the food theme, myself and friends have taken to hitting the Hither Green streets once in a while to check out some nearby eateries. So far we've been to Spice of Life.

Life as she knows it: May 2010
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Monday, 31 May 2010. Cache me if you can. I discovered something new today: GEOCACHING. The official blurb says:. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. I've always loved a good treasure hunt. No, no, no," Dad insisted, "It'll be fine as it is.". When the ...

Life as she knows it: Try hard with a cringe-ance
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2010/02/try-hard-with-cringe-ance.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Saturday, 20 February 2010. Try hard with a cringe-ance. I'm no stranger to embarrassment. In fact, so many embarrassing things have happened to me that I think I'm almost immune to the familiar feeling of self-conscious shame. My blush-inducing repertoire goes right back to my childhood, but one of my most cringeworthy public shamings was in my awkward teenage years. You can still be a winner even if you don't cross the finish line first! It goes wit...

Rachel's Reverie: October 2011
http://rachelsreverie.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Random reflections on music, films and books. Thursday, 27 October 2011. BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES 2 and 5. Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Riccardo Chailly. Barbican, 25 October 2011. It's remarkably difficult to perform Beethoven well. However, conductor Riccardo Chailly claims the Leipzig Gewandhaus have a "secret code" which allows them to get to the heart of his music. They don't always appear to fully unlock this power though. Monday, 24 October 2011. THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN.

Life as she knows it: Soft, strong and WRONG
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2010/12/soft-strong-and-wrong.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Tuesday, 14 December 2010. Soft, strong and WRONG. Time is turning me into a right cynical so-and-so. Case in point: I saw a news article. Sadness aside, perhaps I'll create a 'YEAH I TOTES LOVE THE NEW CGI ANDREX PUPPY, THOUGH PERSONALLY I PREFER CHARMIN BOG ROLL' Facebook group just to prove that us consumers aren't that easily manipulated. Oh my God, it's worse than I thought, Andrex have actually created a Facebook page themselves. Welcome to this...

Life as she knows it: Page against the machine
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2010/11/page-against-machine.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Thursday, 25 November 2010. Page against the machine. I had a really eye-opening moment in London Bridge train station yesterday and it's been playing on my mind ever since. As I was weaving through the crowds between the underground and the overground stations, I spotted an advert for an iPad. It's an advert which I've seen countless times before, but for some reason last night, I stopped and thought about what I was looking at for the first time.

Life as she knows it: The extra hour that never was
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2010/10/extra-hour-that-never-was.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Sunday, 31 October 2010. The extra hour that never was. Twice a year I am baffled by the sheer volume of intelligent people who are totally and utterly fazed by the clocks changing. In the UK, the vast majority of the population have coped with this time-related quirk twice a year for their entire lives, so you'd think we'd all be used to it by now. OK, I'm thinking about this too much now. Time for bed. Or is it? I checked my phone at about 3am (I wa...

Life as she knows it: January 2011
http://hayleydunlop.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Life as she knows it. General musings of a chic geek. Monday, 10 January 2011. Just before Christmas work was crazy. Then on one busy day I received an e-mail that was so unexpected that it pierced through the craziness like a laser and filled me with absolute joy. Where he displays photos of every pen he possesses by country. I felt strangely proud, and his pen-aticism got me thinking about the notion of 'collecting', and what drives people to do it. I've never been much of a collector. The only tim...
