Musings of an Englishman

Musings of an Englishman. Thursday, May 13, 2010. I always expected the last few days of my trip to be relatively mundane - spent on dull desert roads making my way back to Buenos Aires. But as it turned out, South America still had a few more unexpected adventures to throw at me before the trip was out. The Long Road Home. Hello Tom" - the furball said. I exclaimed. "I hardly recognised you with that haircut. What are you doing here? It was good to be back on the road with the freedom of the bike and co...

Musings of an Englishman: February 2010

http://www.musingsofanenglishman.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Musings of an Englishman. Saturday, February 27, 2010. Since leaving the picturesque town of Swakopmund a few days ago, I've circled back through northern Namibia, ventured across Botswana and completed my whistlestop tour of Southern Africa. I've covered 5000km in 8 days in what can only be described as an iron-butt tour. Happily, I can report that the Phoenix has coped well with the testing journey. As Wikipedia will tell you, the Okavango is the world's largest inland delta and home to a huge variety ...

Musings of an Englishman: April 2010

http://www.musingsofanenglishman.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Musings of an Englishman. Saturday, April 24, 2010. Since leaving the harsh roads of southern Bolivia behind, I´ve been on the trail of South America´s most famous historical dynasty - the Incas. The trail is well worn and firmly on the beaten track. But that just means most of the enticing ruins are connected by smooth tarmac roads instead of bone rattling washboard (a welcome change if you ask me). Picking up the trail. On the day I visited the island, the Inca Sun God (Inti) was obviously feeling joll...

Musings of an Englishman: March 2010

http://www.musingsofanenglishman.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Musings of an Englishman. Friday, March 26, 2010. Ruta 40 - the spectacular road north. Since leaving Ushuaia a week ago I´ve been blow off the road, slept rough in the cold winderness and almost lost my rear suspension. I´ve now travelled over 4000 miles in South America and am currently in the lakeside town of San Carlos de Bariloche. The following day I finally hit the tarmac again and road for a relaxing hour or two on the smooth surface, taking in the scenery around the sealike shore of South Americ...

Musings of an Englishman: May 2008

http://www.musingsofanenglishman.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Musings of an Englishman. Wednesday, May 14, 2008. The squadron is complete. Team CanUK made a significant step forward in terms of trip preparation over the weekend – we now have all four bikes that will be going on the adventure. The final addition to the 2008 line-up was Ted’s new bike – a 1998 Honda Fireblade - which I picked up from North London over the weekend. Lets hope she stands up to the Ted test. Musings of an Englishman: August 2008

http://www.musingsofanenglishman.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Musings of an Englishman. Friday, August 22, 2008. Fortunately it was only a sprain and I could still ride without too much discomfort. My bike suffered minor injuries too – a bent front fairing, wonky handlebars and a few more scratches to add to the growing collection. Together we limped in to Mpanda just as the sun was setting. But if you’re thinking that Jerry is the negligent duffer in this story then you’re mistaken. That unfortunate title falls to me. Jerry is well on his way t...So what now for t...

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization: A Straight Line From Misadventure to Adventure

http://profileoftime.blogspot.com/2008/08/straight-line-from-misadventure-to.html

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Saturday, August 23, 2008. A Straight Line From Misadventure to Adventure. What a week it's been indeed. Regular readers of our three blogs will note 2 things immediately - I am incredibly far behind in my posts (and have no pics), while Tyson is basically up-to-date, and has tons of photos clogging up your precious bandwidth. Ah well, such is the price I pay for my ridiculously detailed posts.

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Saturday, August 2, 2008. Sudan Part 1 - The Comfort Zone is Well and Truly Ditched. The following day, whilst waiting for our bikes to arrive, we bought more supplies for the trip to come - water (lots of it), and canned pineapples. These beauties are a Godsend! And delicious pineapple slices luxuriating in a sucrose bath. Mmm Mmm Good! What were we doing here? What did we think of Sudan?

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization: The Aswan Ferry

http://profileoftime.blogspot.com/2008/08/aswan-ferry.html

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Saturday, August 2, 2008. Finally, it was time to load the barge - a rather clunky old bit of barely sea-worthy steel that ferried everything from cars to refrigerators, clothes to office furniture from across lake Nasser and into Sudan. Apparently, there were to be 8 motorcycles in total? Maybe a sparkling, porcelain toilet, complete with velvety bathroom tissue? Links to the Real World.

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Sunday, February 1, 2009. All that remains is to fill in the month or two gap between Sudan and the Cape. Rest assured, that will happen sooner rather than later. In the meantime, check out my Flickr site for a photo diary of my travels. By the way, stay tuned for our next poorly thought out adventure - to the Arctic circle - this coming summer. From Africa to the Arctic.

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Thursday, May 15, 2008. The Presumptive Beast of Burden. Here it is, in all its splendour - my 2006 Kawasaki KLR650. The motorcycle of choice for the US Marine Corps, this workhorse of a bike will carry me across asphalt, dirt, rock, sand, mud, and everything in between. If it does so inelegantly, at least it does so. Wednesday, May 14, 2008. And so it begins. And so, it is with no small degr...

http://profileoftime.blogspot.com/2008/08/adventures-in-aswan.html

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Saturday, August 2, 2008. We awoke early the next day so as to reach Aswan in time to arrange for our departure from Egypt, and our entry into Sudan, via the Aswan-Wadi Halfa Ferry. We had heard that this process could take quite some time, and wanted to take no chances on missing this ferry for a second time. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Links to the Real World.

Rocking the Cradle of Civilization. Being an Account of an Epic Journey to the Land of Africa upon a Steel Horse. Sunday, July 13, 2008. Luxor - Tomb-Raiding and Temple-Gazing. Luxor What can I say? This place was heaven. I've wanted to come here since as long as I can remember, and here I was. Not as I imagined before I started planning this trip, but I was here nonetheless, and I was going to savour every minute of it. Luxor What can I say? August 3, 2008 at 9:12 PM. Musings of an Elf

Monday, August 10, 2015. In celebration of finishing. I thought I’d share some snippets. Since I have been (and will be) jabbering on and on about it, the least I could do is show you some of it, right? As always, this is first draft material here, so read at the risk of eyeball injuries. Oh" She was silent for all of three seconds before saying, "So what do I call you?
