Photography and the Creative Process. Where is my picture? January 7, 2013. A group of friends and I went on a photographic scavenger hunt in Alexandria, Virginia, today. Our assignment was to capture images that relate to selected words, including these: interaction, duo, and circular. Below are the photographs I made to encapsulate these words. Alexandria has many houses with old, wavy glass, which affects how images are reflected back to the viewer. Tom’s Wholesale Toy. April 25, 2009. August 3, 2008.

Photography and the Creative Process. Where is my picture? Natural Light is an Elusive Subject. July 3, 2008. Light always plays a part to a greater or lesser degree in any photograph. Sometimes, as was the case the morning of June 30 when I captured the image in this post, light becomes a compositional element in the photograph. But light can be a fickle subject. She is prone to fool your lightmeter, claiming for herself center stage, causing your camera to underexpose your main subject. The Power of Art.

Photography and the Creative Process. Where is my picture? Film and the Nature of Light. December 11, 2010. With digital cameras, photographers no longer have to pay much attention to the nature of light, and in particular, the color temperature of light, because digital cameras automatically adjust for differing light temperatures. For those of us who still shoot using film, however, color temperature is an important consideration. Unfortunately, color print film is designed to record images under dayli...

Photography and the Creative Process. Where is my picture? A Cubist Critique of Photographic Art. February 21, 2012. According the Rozanova, the artist must be more than a passive imitator of nature. Rather, the artist must be “an active spokesman of his relationship with [nature].”. How can one do this? Might the same criticism be leveled against the popular photographic art of today? How will the viewer respond to such a photograph? Another image in which the resulting picture differs substantially fro...

Photography and the Creative Process. Where is my picture? November 26, 2015. Is this photo a mere artifact from my recent sojourn in New York, or can it be seen as a social commentary on our times. In this image, the iron lady who welcomes all comers to New York Harbor is at once clear and distinct, and again blurry and vague. Is she facing out in a welcoming gesture, or has she turned her back on those who seek freedom? Homemade Soft Focus Lens. November 16, 2013. July 4, 2013. November 27, 2012. Perha...
