Interesting facts about sugar cane. Sugarcane is spread by cuttings rather than by seed. These cuttings are then hand planted. This cutting can then produce several harvestings. After each harvest the number of new stalks called ratoons are less until they need to be replanted. A cutting may give up to 10 harvests until it requires replanting. The sugarcane field is usually burned before harvesting to remove the dried vegetation leaving the sugarcane stalks and killing venomous snakes. The power of Sugar.

I know this topic isn’t exactly the middle passage but still interesting. Scarification means to cut patterns into the skin deliberately to purposefully make scars. This is one of the ways African tribes would adorn their bodies which were mostly naked. Scarification can be done in certain ways to either welt or raise the skin or grooves can be cut into the skin. Tribes in Nigeria, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Chad can still be seen to this day practicing this body modification. Justin A. Warriner.
