http://record-fiend.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Chicago Guitar Killers (Blue Night Records, 1979). Before the Chess Records catalogue was acquired by MCA in the 1980s, the recordings of lesser-known musicians on the legendary Chicago label were generally only available on British or Japanese imports. Unofficially, however, one could also find such obscure material on bootleg releases like this one. MCA finally got around to putting out most of the rare Chess material on the four-CD Chess Blues. Chess Blues Piano Greats. Anyway...

Saturday, September 24, 2011. Nat Adderley - Little Big Horn! Riverside, 1963; 1998). While it probably isn't in the Top Ten lists of any expert jazz critics, Nathaniel "Nat" Adderley's Little Big Horn! Well, to each his or her own. L TO R: JUNIOR MANCE, NAT ADDERLEY, and KENNY BURRELL. This album is particularly impressive not only because it's an example of mid-1960s jazz at its finest but also because all eight performances were composed or co-composed by Adderley. For this material, he couldn't h...

Monday, October 31, 2011. Waylon Jennings - Leavin' Town (RCA Victor, 1966). On a song-by-song basis, Leavin' Town. Even though Jennings was still being forced into a mold at this point in his career, one has to give credit to whoever was responsible for assembling this impeccable mix of material by other songwriters and the singer's own compositions and co-compositions. Intentional or not, several selections combine to make Leavin' Town. WAYLON "DEPARTING THE MUNICIPALITY". 2 Time to Bum Again. 12 I Won...

Friday, February 26, 2010. The Hokum Boys - You Can't Get Enough of That Stuff (Yazoo, 1975). There were many aggregations of black musicians in Chicago during the 1920s and 1930s who used the name the Hokum Boys or, in some cases, the Famous Hokum Boys. Although some of the later versions included prewar blues stars like Big Bill Broonzy, Casey Bill Weldon, and Washboard Sam, the sides compiled on You Can't Get Enough of That Stuff. As such, the Hokum Boys were less an actual group and more of a term th...
