My City Too seeks to contribute to policy and debate at both a local and regional level to ensure that youth participation is embedded within local and regional processes. Through its Localism Bill, the current government aims to shift power on decision-making about planning and the built environment back into the hands of individuals, communities and councils (DCLG, 2011). But will young people be able to vote in the referendums? Will they be invited into neighbourhood forums? Open City the architecture.

My City Too’s peer-to-peer work is a valuable way of reinforcing leadership skills as well as being able to reach large numbers of young people quickly and effectively. It begins to equip young people with valuable skills enabling them to engage with decision-makers in a meaningful way. We feel this type of engagement has real benefits to the industry as a model that can be replicated in a number of settings with an ability to reach a large number of young people. Public speaking provides opportunities for young people to articulate their views to a wide audience of decision-makers and influencers. We believe taking on these speaking roles develops communication skills and increases confidence, providing young people with valuable skills. It is also a crucial method of demonstrating the knowledge and skills of young people, encouraging others to involve them in their work.
