Best laid plans | A Year in Berlin
https://yearinberlin.com/2012/06/22/best-laid-plans
A Year in Berlin. While travelling along the B96, en route to another abandoned sanitorium, we noticed a grey monument at the side of the road. We saw it too late and were driving too quickly to turn in and take a look. We promised ourselves to look for it on the way back and I’m glad we did. It turned out to be one of the most unique monuments we’ve found so far. There are lots of Soviet monuments throughout what was East Germany. And it’s understandable. According to Wikipedia. To this monument online ...

Making films, meeting friends | A Year in Berlin

A Year in Berlin. Making films, meeting friends. My DDR T-Shirt poster, 2008. Almost five years ago, 60 or 70 people crammed into Fuel Café Bar in Manchester to watch My DDR T-Shirt. It was the first time the film had ever been screened in public and it was a big deal for me – for two reasons. Making My DDR T-Shirt. Was often a lonely experience. Filmmaking can be that way. It’s intensely solitary – just you, the computer and your project. You can never trust whether that sequence...Of course, many of th...

About | A Year in Berlin
https://yearinberlin.com/about
A Year in Berlin. Berlin is an amazing place. It fascinated me from my very first visit in 2005. I even went on to make a film about it called My DDR T-Shirt. But beyond the fascination, there’s something about Berlin that feels like home. Considering I can’t speak German, this might sound strange. I’ve almost completed one film while in Berlin, A Nuclear Family. It’s nothing to do with Berlin but perhaps it’s worth a look at the trailer. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. My DDR T-Shirt: My DDR T-Shirt Needs You!
http://myddrtshirt.blogspot.com/2009/04/my-ddr-t-shirt-needs-you.html
Wednesday, 29 April 2009. My DDR T-Shirt Needs You! I got an email the other day from a dude in Spain. He'd found My DDR T-Shirt and wanted to help somehow. As a Spanish translation has already been done and he couldn't organise a screening, he wrote an article on his blog with links to the site (here's the article. His blog is normally about karate and I didn't get many hits from Spain as a result but even so, he did something to help and I'm very grateful. Thanks Miguel. Can you organise a screening?

Hawkinsian Institute: Freedom #1
http://hawkinsian.blogspot.com/2008/02/freedom-1.html
Tuesday, 12 February 2008. That's not freedom. That's oppression! I agree with my sister. Why would we choose to buy something for £20 on Christmas Eve that would be available for £10 on Boxing Day? And of greater value than money, why would people spend so much time traipsing around the shops? Do we do it for the love of our friends and family, or for another reason? For about three years, I've been working on a documentary about East Germany. Tuesday, February 12, 2008. My DDR T-Shirt blog.

Hawkinsian Institute: I love documentaries
http://hawkinsian.blogspot.com/2008/09/i-love-documentaries.html
Monday, 22 September 2008. I love documentaries. Like a million other people, I have a lot to thank them for. So let me just say again, I love documentaries. So, yes. Broadcasting has had an enormous impact on my brain. And in terms of being educated by it, this is primarily through documentaries. I've just made a documentary. I'm very proud of it. It's called My DDR T-Shirt. In these multi-channel days, making documentaries has become more complicated - and they are suffering. Really suffering. ...Docum...

You are here: Hawkinsian Productions. My DDR T-Shirt is a documentary film by Ian Hawkins. It was inspired by a trip to Berlin in 2005. When Ian bought a souvenir t-shirt with the old East German communist symbol on it, he realised he needed to learn about life in East Germany (the DDR, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik) before he could wear it. You are here: Hawkinsian Productions. It’s easy to get involved with Hawkinsian Productions. We need all kinds of help – maybe you can supply it? The chances of our films making it to your local cinema are pretty slim. But if you recommend our films to a friend, one viewer becomes two. If you play our films next time you have four friends around, one viewer becomes five. If you organise a local screening and 20 people turn up…you get the idea. And let’s talk. And let’s talk. And tell us your thoughts.
