My Guatemala Story: Agatha takes her toll
http://myguatemalastory.blogspot.com/2010/06/agatha-takes-her-toll.html
Sunday, June 6, 2010. Agatha takes her toll. Maybe this will pique your interest? One of the many footprints that Agatha left; a sinkhole in Guatemala city that dragged with it an abandoned(thankfully) three story building. Here's what the house looked like today, one week later when we were finally able to get there in a car. Now that you have an idea of the chronology of events in my town, consider this only the average occurrence. While 20 people died in total in our small town, 150 more died in o...
My Guatemala Story: December 2008
http://myguatemalastory.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 9, 2008. Visits to the Villages. Wednesday, December 3, 2008. Back from Thanksgiving, On with Work. Aside from work at the moment I’m in a very intensive process of decorating my new house with Christmas adornments and drowning out the barking dogs and marimba music in the neighborhood with Bing Crosby and the Love Actually Soundtrack. Although I lost track of time before Thanksgiving, I’ll be sure to be good and ready when Christmas gets here! Until next time…. Visits to the Villages.
My Guatemala Story: September 2010
http://myguatemalastory.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 19, 2010. Lessons Learned - Part 1. Having already passed the 2 Year mark in my Peace Corps service - 2 years, 1 month and 6 days to be exact - i figured it would be appropriate to gather some rather memorable experiences and observations and somehow translate them into lessons learned or qualities acquired- however abstract the connection may seem. I plan to do this in several entries. With all the surprises and new ways of doing things, at times I feel like I’ve taken up residen...

Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real: January 2010
http://beveres.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real. Sunday, January 31, 2010. Meet Bobby, or if you're on head-scratching terms with him, you can just call him Bobito. Like all other dogs in Guatemala, he is referred to as a chucho. Street dog) instead of perro. Dog) I bet that if dogs had the same rights as humans, then chucho. Would probably be considered a derogatory term used against perros. But let's not get political. Bobby is no ordinary chucho. He is Alpha Alpha male- yes, I used two. Bobby has made...

Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real. Monday, April 26, 2010. Busting and Dusting out the SLR. Sunday, April 25, 2010. The Billy Mays Effect. All right, so I never actually watched infomercials (that much), but we have all seen, and skipped past, the pitch for MagneScribe. So then why on earth am I writing about infomercials in Guatemala? I don't own a television, thus ruling out any and all possibility of even having to think. Bus) rides. Oh, the camioneta. Show a few grotesque photos of infe...
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real: Ambassadorial Visit
http://beveres.blogspot.com/2010/06/ambassadorial-visit.html
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real. Saturday, June 12, 2010. It is truly rare that an ambassador takes the time to visit communities, see Peace Corps volunteers' work and the people whom with they work alongside, learn an indigenous language- all for the sake of doing his job to the best of his ability. Guatemala is lucky to have an incredibly interested and literally out-going representative to Guatemala, Ambassador Stephen McFarland. Isa giving Ambassador McFarland a reconocimiento. Admit ...
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real: Express Kidnapping
http://beveres.blogspot.com/2010/07/express-kidnapping.html
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real. Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Having twenty-one days of annual leave left before my completion of service (COS), I decided to do a bit of traveling around Central America. My first week was planned and spent on Bay Islands in Honduras with my two training buddies, Marisha and Robin, and then two weeks in Nicaragua to spend time with my dear friend and fellow Peace Corps volunteer, Carolyn. After waiting at the bus stop for about ten or fifteen minutes, a woman...
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real: Guatemalan Birthdays
http://beveres.blogspot.com/2010/06/guatemalan-birthdays.html
Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real. Thursday, June 10, 2010. In Comitancillo, birthdays are not a particularly big celebratory occasion as it has become in the Western world; lavish parties with an assortment of decorations, finger foods, and a much-too-expensive birthday cake that contains over-processed cream that doesn't really taste like cream, but more like the container it actually came from. Just like any other meeting in Guatemala, a detailed agenda is made. Ño de todo nosotros".

Everything you can imagine in Guatemala is real. Saturday, June 26, 2010. An Alternative Way of Cooking. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." - Theodore Roosevelt. Of the innumerable life skills I have learnt whilst being down here, I have finally learnt how to cook. For those of you who have known me for quite a while, this truly is nothing short of a miracle, right? And for all of you who thought that the day would never come. well, I sure showed you. Let me rephrase: with a Peace Corps.

Ana Bárbara, Qué Bárbara, Barbita, Barbarita, la hija más canchita de doña Isa y las mujeres artesanas, Vere. Mi Vida Guatemalteca
Tuesday, December 30, 2008. I know I haven´t written in a while, so I´ll try to give a succint update of everything. I arrived in Xela yesterday and right now am trying to sort out my life-meaning finding a job, maybe taking some more classes, and deciding if I want to live with my host family or find an apartment. My biggest plans, besides job searching, is hopefully going salsa dancing tonight. Once I figure out more of my life, I´ll let you all know. Sunday, November 23, 2008. Sunday, November 16, 2008.
