Lesson 9: The Expanding and Evolving Universe. Next Lesson →. In this activity, students use Sloan and Galex data to analyze the properties of galaxies in the early universe. They will look at evidence that supports that the early galaxies were different than today’s. They will see that early galaxies were actually bluer. Students will be able to observe that galaxies in the past (high red-shift) appear different (bluer) than nearby (low red-shift) galaxies. LCD projector with computer. Push students to ...

Lesson 1: Comparing Images of Different Wavelengths. Larr; Lessons Overview. Next Lesson →. 40 minutes (can be combined with Lesson 2, as some students take less time). The teacher will be able to assess relevant prior knowledge and student ideas. Students will be able to compare images of galaxies at optical and UV wavelengths. Students will be able to note the galaxies’ differences, similarities and features. Students will become familiar with looking at False Color Images. For each team of 2-4 students.

Lesson 4: Cosmic Confrontation Cards. Next Lesson →. In this activity, students look at different forms of spectra (continuous, emission and absorption) and differentiate between them / their causes. Following this, the students examine sample spectra from the three featured galaxies (NGC 3187, UGC 11816 and the Toverball Galaxy), and note that common emission peaks have moved. 20-40 minutes for card game (or more if you permit). 20 minutes for background reading and review of rules. Print (in black/whit...

Lesson 8: Thinking About Your Hubble Diagram. Next Lesson →. In this activity, students share their discussions and interpretations about their own Hubble Diagram using this data. Students will be able to construct a Hubble Diagram from real data. Students will be able to understand the initial evidence for the expansion of the universe (as seen in their graph of magnitude and redshift). LCD projector with computer. Downloaded file of merged centroid data (Figure 8.1). For each team of 2-4 students:.

Lesson 10: Writing a Argumentative Letter. In this activity, students read a fictional situation that raises some of the common public and student misconceptions about the Big Bang. Students are asked to respond to the fictional situation in writing or the teacher may give students the option to allow students to role play the response with a partner. 10 minutes for reading. Rebuttal letter / role play can be assigned for homework. In class writing time may vary. Worksheet for writing rebuttal letter.
