A Kitchen-Sized Pilot System. May 22, 2015. 50 Grams of hops! I’ve been thinking for some time about kicking off a “pilot” sized system for homebrewing. Admittedly, this is somewhat silly considering that our existing 10 gallon system. Would often be used as a “pilot” system for a legitimate full-sized brewery, but the truth is that I’ve often thought that same process could work well at the homebrew scale. After looking into brew in bag (BIAB) setups, I arrived at the rather obvious idea that you could ...

Centennial and Cascade Hop plants in place. May 7, 2015. Ignore the dog butt. I didn’t end up making it to the hardware store for more twine, so I just used some kitchen string for the remaining two hop plants. While I was ignoring the centennial and cascade plans, they started growing upon themselves and wrapped quite a nice bundle. I took an hour this morning to unravel them and train them up some string on either side of the magnum hop bed. Here below we see about three weeks later. Next step will be ...

Brewing and drinking in the Nation's Capital. Skip to primary content. This page should be considered a work in progress, but I’m doing my best to add/update as I have time*. Our brewing setup has followed Darwin’s natural homebrewing evolution (hmm, maybe this needs a graphic) from turkey fryer extract to cooler mash tun to two-tiered dedicated brewing sculpture. Although there are still MANY many upgrades to be accomplished in the future, this page should reflect our current brewing setup. The Boil ket...

We drink a lot of Dogfish Head beer. A LOT of it. Since we are essentially just a hop and a skip from our local Dogfish Head Alehouse. We were surprised to see an old friend Drew running the Falls Church location, and met a bunch of new friends during the day. The staff was fantastic and kept us all “well hydrated” thro...The Fashionab...

Brewing and drinking in the Nation's Capital. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. April 22, 2015. Well, it’s been a long cold winter, one that was devastating for our homebrew production capacity with temperatures routinely hanging between 20 and 30 degrees. As most can attest, just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you drink less beer even if you brew less beer, so basic supply and demand equations have resulted in our five tap keggerator running completely dry. In other news, I’ve be...
