My Life without a Microwave

My Life without a Microwave. Wednesday, March 16, 2011. I wanted to share what Lindsey and I did for my birthday. It was far from what I would consider a traditional birthday celebration but it was really memorable! We started the day with lunch at Fugu, an awesome Chinese restaurant that has an americanized and traditional Chinese menu. We both ordered main dishes from the Chinese menu, and they were two of the best chinese meals I have ever had the joy to eat. After the protests and working our way out...

My Life without a Microwave: February 2011

http://www.mylifewithoutamicrowave.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

My Life without a Microwave. Saturday, February 26, 2011. The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 about 20 years before the Michigan territory was acknowledged as a state. I'm not really sure what made people settle in this part of the country, I've heard rumors that the trapping of animals for furs did a fair bit for the economy in the past. That's for you Kaitlin). Football is big here, the stadium, also known as "The Big House" is the largest football stadium in the world! In the summer time th...

My Life without a Microwave: The Students

http://www.mylifewithoutamicrowave.blogspot.com/2011/03/students.html

My Life without a Microwave. Tuesday, March 8, 2011. In my last post, I talked about the sheer number of students that attend UoM. Spring break was last week, and you can definitely tell that it is over, back to lines everywhere- coffee shops, convenience stores, restaurants, to get on buses, to get off buses- I'm not joking, lines everywhere. I think he has sweat pants and a bag with Michigan on them. And with their sweatpants they also love to wear their decorative boots. The students seem pretty laid ...

My Life without a Microwave. Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Sal, the Italian. This place has good coffee shops - 2 different Starbucks (one is 2 stories! Within walking distance but a host of other local coffee shops that create great locations for studying and caffeinating. I am not really into this discussion, they seem young. and like they are trolling - and I didn't come to Starbucks to get hit on, rather I'd like to read my paper. You guessed it, SAL. And he is sitting with a girl at a table having a v...

My Life without a Microwave: My Apartment

http://www.mylifewithoutamicrowave.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-apartment.html

My Life without a Microwave. Saturday, February 26, 2011. I live about 1 mile from the building where I generally work, which is the chemistry department, but I also will do work at the Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB) that is being showcased as my background to this blog. The first day that I got here, when I was looking around I found this cute surprise in the freezer. I sadly had to destroy it as soon as I had some food to put in the freezer. Home for a month or so at least. I'm a graduate ...

Food and Fermentation: February 2011

http://foodandfermentation.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 8, 2011. City by the bay. with the food and the beer. We arrived in SF and checked in to our hotel around dinnertime; with two full days of conference ahead we were not about to let the night go to waste. S and R split a taxi with me to the Italian area of town within walking distance of Chinatown and also many well-advertised strip clubs. We went to S's usual dining establishment when he comes home to SF, Caffe Sport. Fish cake with fresh pickled cucumber. At this point, it was well af...

Food and Fermentation: The Big Easy, Part II

http://foodandfermentation.blogspot.com/2011/07/big-easy-part-ii.html

Saturday, July 2, 2011. The Big Easy, Part II. Yes, I did mean to post this while we were still in New Orleans, but so it goes! The lighting is mostly neon. Hush puppies, crawfish and jambalaya. Oysters in their greasy glory. I promised the grill chef I wouldn't take a headshot so the Feds couldn't find him. Seriously. He asked me not to. Gold masks. Actually made out of gold. I could use it as a decoration, you say? If you're ever looking for it, print this picture and go for a walk. I ordered a beer, s...

http://foodandfermentation.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 27, 2010. AIChE, Salt Lake City, and Recent Brews. Salt Lake City itself was fairly picturesque. A very clean city with a mountain backdrop and lots of interesting architecture. Below are a set of pictures from the city starting with the conference center and then some pictures from the Temple Square area. Pretty hard to miss the Mormon influence on this city. Food and Fermentation: Poutine

http://foodandfermentation.blogspot.com/2011/03/poutine.html

Friday, March 18, 2011. I had never eaten cheese curds. But, after inexplicably becoming surrounded by people from the Midwest where these succulent morsels of disguised fat are battered and deep-fried, I had to try them. We bought a plastic package of cheddar curds from the bagged cheese section of the COOP six months ago. I ate two or three, discarding the rest. Seriously, cheese curds? You were supposed to be delicious, not disappointing! As drawn by me in MS Paint. Basically the same as regular pouti...

Food and Fermentation: May 2011

http://foodandfermentation.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 1, 2011. The Big Easy, Part I. I arrived sometime yesterday afternoon after two swift flights with a layover in D. C. Our hotel boasts a few short blocks to the French Quarter and I intended to take some advantage of this. A had arrived earlier and was waking up from a cat nap. She had been for a walk and already bought a beautiful pink carnival mask. For $15? Saturday's sessions were winding down and I didn't have to present until Sunday night, so we hit the Quarter with Other A and the PI.

Monday, December 13, 2010. Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it.". Not here at Food and Fermentation. We try to savor every moment, bite, and sip of the delicious food and brew that comes across our path. The post for today is one that I've actually been meaning to write up for a week or two now and it looks at an awesome collaboration between the Hill Farmstead Brewery. And Cigar City Brewing. Food and Fermentation: Toscana soup and Country Crêpes

http://foodandfermentation.blogspot.com/2011/05/toscana-soup-and-country-crepes.html

Sunday, May 1, 2011. Toscana soup and Country Crêpes. This past week I picked up a bunch of kale at the COOP. I don't mind the occasional slow-cooked kale or collard greens with flavorful fatty meat but this time of year I like a little green still in the kale when I eat it. My go-to recipe for kale under these circumstances is a simple toscana soup. Granted one of my roommates in college would drink buttermilk straight up (and I subsequently never had the problem of leftovers), but that's not my style.
