MidLife MidWest: January 2015

http://www.mymidlifemidwest.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 28, 2015. All well intended advice, but I was not looking for remedies because I was embracing my inertia. I followed my body and mind where it wanted to go. Which was no where. I did nothing. Well, almost nothing. I wrote Haiku. Today . . . I began painting my Haiku. Hai·ku (ˈhīˌko͞o). Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, five; employing highly evocative allusions and comparisons. We have been chasing. The dream of a perfect life. As if ours was not.

MidLife MidWest: June 2013

http://www.mymidlifemidwest.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 16, 2013. Today I graduated from a Spiritual Direction formation program - Prairie Fire. Prairie Fire is a joint project of the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center and Mt. St. Scholastica's Sophia Center. I was asked to share a reflection of my past three years, time in this program. Here is an excerpt from what I shared:. Something that is intensely missing. Life's longing, life's search for happiness, life's search for the ideal. All this searching happens while one copes with the realit...

MidLife MidWest: Consort Parvati

http://www.mymidlifemidwest.blogspot.com/2015/06/consort-parvati.html

Sunday, June 7, 2015. On Earth, you can't be contained. In one single Name. Con sort [noun] 1. conjunction, association; 2. group assembly. Con sort [verb] 1. to keep company; 2. accord, harmonize. This would sometimes raise questions from the young ones, "What's a consort? Or "She was a concert? Even "Was the mom, like all, able to, sort of, fold up? So cheers to Parvati - gentle and nurturing Hindu goddess of love, devotion, and fertility; and to her consort Shiva - destroyer, recycler, and generator o...

Thursday, June 11, 2015. I believe in the intuitive or artistic comprehension of truth, even beyond reason.". It was never my. Intention to become you,. But I had no choice. One day, sans children, I brought over some of my writings. Just as when I brought the newsletter, she took my copy and motioned for me to wait in her living room. Her usual complaints of writers not knowing basic rules of grammar were absent. The "Jesus Christ what's this? I don't know what to say," I finally coughed out. A few days...

MidLife MidWest: Sri Ganesha

http://www.mymidlifemidwest.blogspot.com/2015/05/sri-ganesha.html

Thursday, May 21, 2015. Obstacles, placed in. The path or moved aside, are. Ga-nesh-a (also Gan-esh) - Hindu - the God of Wisdom; placer or remover of obstacles, especially at the beginning of a journey or new endeavor; son of Parvati and Shiva; human body with elephant head. He scoffed. It took all my effort to stay with the image, to not abandon my meditation right then and there. It was too weird. I felt like I was no longer alone in my physical space, no longer deep in meditation. What are you saying?

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: Sprung from my tower

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2014/05/sprung-from-my-tower.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Saturday, May 24, 2014. Sprung from my tower. This morning my neutrophils were 2280, which is over twice as high as they needed to be! That must be some kind of powerful bone marrow meditation I invented. I must admit, I feel a bit like a rockstar, which is funny considering I didn't actually do anything. Thank you, everyone, for the well-wishes that helped me achieve this goal! I feel like Rapunzel when she escaped from her tower, singing:. Just smell the grass! Thank you f...

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: Am I? Can I?

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2015/04/am-i-can-i.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Friday, April 17, 2015. I found myself at the Oncology clinic every day this week for iron infusions. This is because my hemoglobin and iron were dreadfully low at my chemo appointment on Monday. Dr. Oncologist said that I'd lost two units of blood since she'd last seen me! To sit with her so that I could go get my treatments. The coordination kinda stressed me out. Reason 2: The waiting room. Oh, the oncology waiting room. I have blogged about the waiting room befor...This ...

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: February 2015

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Monday, February 9, 2015. Are nasty, so it's better to suffer a bit of heart damage than to risk the potential consequences of ceasing the treatment. That led me to a question about prognosis. A few people at work have asked me about it, and I haven't known what to tell them. My prognosis is technically "poor" because the best evidence suggests that I had (have? It was another great trip with a whole pile of good news. I hope I can stay on this trajectory for a long while.

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: Fitness and Cancer

http://carnations.blogspot.com/p/fitness-and-cancer.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Obviously it's important to stay physically fit, no matter who you are. But if you are a cancer patient or survivor, it is particularly important. Maintaining a healthy weight for your body could improve your prognosis, both by helping you cope with the side effects of treatment and by decreasing the chance for recurrence. Walking to chemotherapy: Blue machine- puke machine. Walking in my neighborhood in the spring, 1 month after mastectomy: Beauty. Biking to work in the rai...

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: The last goodbye

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-last-goodbye.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Tuesday, January 6, 2015. He picked me up just after 8am. I tossed my snowpants in the cab just in case we had to hike out of a snow-filled ditch. Once we hit the interstate he disclosed that the southbound traffic had been plugged up earlier, but hopefully it's cleared now? It's fitting that just as my Cancer year is winding down, Dad has found a new job. He starts on Monday. Congratulations, dad! I'm going to miss them. 3. Today's appointment with Dr. Surgical Oncologi...

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: November 2014

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Sunday, November 23, 2014. It's a perfect time to write some thank-you notes. The girls are at a mindfulness for children yoga class (thank you, 100 miles to nowhere, for making that possible! So I found a spot at a nearby coffee shop. I only wish I had more time. It's going by too quickly. Always does. Hope you are enjoying your Sunday! Tuesday, November 18, 2014. In the meantime, cancer can eat my dust. I hope it chokes on it. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Some Girls Prefer Carnations: Gone

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2015/01/gone.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Wednesday, January 28, 2015. There's a lot of mental preparation you go through to get your game face on for a PET scan, and now I had to pause the game. Ack! But I'll forgive them because in the scheme of things it was no big deal. Needless to say, my MIL and I went out to breakfast anyway. I had a short stack of comfort carbs, and I let almost the entire globe of butter melt into the stack. PET scan scheduling people can suck it. How was your Christmas? Mobile, but as chil...

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: Dear Calvin

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2015/03/dear-calvin.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Monday, March 16, 2015. I hope that you had a wonderful time at your birthday party last weekend! It was so much fun to see you toddling all over the place and babbling about everything. You, as always, were the life of the party, but not in the usual way that that expression is meant. You were the life of the party with your chill demeanor and delightful personality. You had smiles for everyone. You do not yet know the meaning of "stranger danger". Yesterday I was using you...

Some Girls Prefer Carnations: "I never mowed in March before"

http://carnations.blogspot.com/2012/03/i-never-mowed-in-march-before.html

Some Girls Prefer Carnations. Friday, March 30, 2012. I never mowed in March before". I fear that so much discussion of weather will betray my midwestern origins, but daily I am awed by spring 2012. Is it a heightened awareness because of the incredible transition that I made between this March and the last? No, I don't think so. I think something unusual is indeed in the air. I didn't get out the camera until dusk, but using the sky as back-lighting I was able to acquire a few worthy photos. Lovely post...

My dad fought cancer for several years. There were surgeries, treatments and periods of remission. But, in the end, it always returned. My Midlife Mayhem By Louisa Simmonds. Muddling Through Middle Age With A Warm Heart And A Big Gob. Cooking For A Family Of Dietary Heathens. Asymp; 3 Comments. I like to think I cook healthily and creatively but there are some food trends that not even I can contemplate. Take the green smoothie. My Mid-Life Motherhood

It's not a mid-life crisis, it's motherhood in my 40's! Life is full with two teens and a tot! Friday, February 7, 2014. I Just Love You! As we nestled down into bed after a late night, the bedroom door suddenly flung open and a miniature silhouette declared into the darkness, "I just love you! Cupcake promptly pulled herself up onto the bed, sprawled on top of me sideways and whispered again, "I just love you.". Nothing says love like a cuddle from my little cherub, even in the middle of the night!

My Midlife Project

Remodeling a Middle-Aged Mom. Subscribe to Email Updates. Recently I’ve felt some desperation about my destination. Are we there yet? How many more miles before we get there? Mother, May I Skip the Month of May? Today is my grandma’s birthday. It’s too bad she isn’t here to celebrate. She always loved cake and ice cream…. Maybe that’s why I do, too. Stepping Out and Moving Forward. Sometimes I feel as if I’m a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. Make that “much of the time”.
