AllGriffs: The Coffin Path
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-coffin-path.html
Monday, 13 April 2015. A bright sunny post-Easter weekend persuaded us out to one of the loveliest stretches of the SW Coast Path near Zennor. This also gave us the opportunity to discover the Coffin Path, another of the ancient trackways of West Penwith. It turned out to be a good decision as the walk was lovely. In some parts of the country the route taken by a coffin traditionally became what we now think of as a right of way. The landscape is ancient: the field boundaries consisting of massive boulde...

AllGriffs: The Saints' Way 3
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-saints-way-3.html
Monday, 19 January 2015. The Saints' Way 3. It was a bright, cold Sunday morning when we set out to complete the Saints' Way. Scraping the ice off our car windows, we set off into a fiercely bright sun, the windmills standing stationary in their gaunt white elegance against the clear blue sky. The weather forecasters were predicting cold, ice and snow for most of the country but not for Cornwall. The sunshine endured as we set off across some muddy fields: The worst it has ever been. We skirted the Iron ...

AllGriffs: December 2013
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, 14 December 2013. A generation is said to be 30 years long. This year we followed this fine tradition by celebrating a 90th, 60th, two 30ths and a 0th birthday. Zoe arrived on a snowy ‘essential travel only’ weekend early in the new year, a sister for Olly. This brought the grandchildren count to a balanced four: m/f and f/m. Kate celebrated her 60th birthday in late January with a family party in Kew and, naturally, a Cornish cliff walk with local friends. Through some wonderful scenery from P...

AllGriffs: The traveller
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-traveller.html
Thursday, 16 April 2015. Once upon a time there was a lion, slightly cross-eyed, but solid and made of bronze. His life was not what many people would call exciting. He spent his time on a large brown wooden door at the entrance to a house outside Nicosia. When people came to the door, they lifted the large ring in his mouth and knocked, sending a sonorous sound reverberating through the house. Was he going to be melted down and turned into shell-casing or, worse still, into a cooking pot? There were ups...

AllGriffs: July 2013
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, 28 July 2013. Cycling the Danube Part 2. Two years ago we took it into our heads to cycle along the Danube from Vienna via Bratislava to Budapest ( see here. We so enjoyed this that we resolved to cycle the upper stretch: from Passau (Germany) to Vienna. Arriving in Vienna we had time to spend with friends and to visit some of the sights - it was too hot for the Hofburg or Schonbrunn Palaces - and then took an overnight train to Venice. Why Venice when we went there last year? We needed a more re...

AllGriffs: February 2014
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 25 February 2014. The Lego's gone, the Playmobil. Is cluttered safe away. And all the toys, those playful joys,. Must wait another day. Our guests have gone, they're far away. They've left us on our own. With quiet rooms, dull afternoons,. We're empty, all alone. But 'neath the sofa, on the rug. We find they've left some gear. A sock or two, a Lego piece. And other items dear. To pack these up and send them back. Is slamming the front door. On memories - that ghostly fizz -. 13 February half term.

AllGriffs: July 2014

Monday, 7 July 2014. One inherits a miscellaneous collection of papers from one's ancestors. Some, like birth certificates and carefully-catalogued photograph albums, are self explanatory. Others are not. This puzzle is in the second category. In amongst my father's many papers were five items which clearly came to him from previous generations: three albums of cartes de visite. Sadly not catalogued; an occasional book with various slightly mawkish bons mots. A look at the Selmeston church website. Quite...

AllGriffs: The Saints' Way 2
http://allgriffs.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-saints-way-2.html
Sunday, 11 January 2015. The Saints' Way 2. On a Sunday when the French were marching in their millions pour Charlie. We set out on the next stretch of the Saints' Way from Withiel to Luxulyan. clutching our pencils in solidarity. We were following the route of people who also sought a safe entry to paradise through rather more peaceful means than the terrorists, following the instructions of a rival prophet. A service was under way and we enjoyed watching a farmer and his sons delivering a horse-drawn p...
