We're nowhere close to eating on a dollar a day in this household, though I do practice some hardcore couponing. But I am a fan of epic journeys, and it strikes me that he is on one. Plus, I just like the way he thinks. And he's funny. Links to this post. Tuesday, July 20, 2010. People who live in glass houses.should move. Turns out they were sticking out. After e...

Friday, May 28, 2010. That's what my dad called the life of a lawyer before I went to law school. I didn't really believe him, and dismissed his words as typical Dad hyperbole. Links to this post. Gerbera Daisy, early morning. Links to this post. Sunday, May 23, 2010. Turtles don't do drama. This is what we do. And we do it, apparently, regardless of what else is going on - with each other, with our lives, with anything. Links to this post. Friday, May 7, 2010. Sarcastic left-wingers in love. Me: Dangit,...

Wednesday, February 24, 2010. The tide, revisited. I went to write an email to Kristy, and I realized it was a post anyway. T's mother apparently gets regular emails from The Universe, and she forwarded one recently, which is a particular favorite of hers. It read:. Sometimes, [T's Mom], having more fun and being happier comes from looking for each in crazy, new places; instead of waiting for them to come from where you've found them before or where others are now finding them. Red hot smokin' love,.

Trailheadcase: Last days
http://trailheadcase.blogspot.com/2010/12/last-days.html
Thursday, December 2, 2010. I used to hold my grandmother’s hands, usually when crossing the street. But last night she held mine, both of them, as I leaned awkwardly over the hospital bed. Her grip was surprisingly strong. I looked down at the nearly translucent skin on her hands, which are bruised and scabbed from a fall, and remembered them tanned and covered in mango juice. My grandmother’s hands always bring the same image. But they were abundant on the trees in her Florida backyard. The mango juice...

Trailheadcase: December 2010
http://trailheadcase.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 2, 2010. My parents divorced when I was eight, which split up an already fragmented family. I was the youngest of five children, and yet an only child between my parents. That first summer after their separation, they did a smart thing. They let my grandmother take me. Grandma had certain ideas about the care and management of children, and they involved a combination of absolutely impenetrable boundaries, close supervision, and high levels of indulgence. My grandmother had been a prop...

Trailheadcase: "A marketable facade"

Not every woman is pretty. We should not have. To be, to be valued, to be considered fully human, to be considered worth as much as a beautiful woman. The conflation of a woman’s beauty and desirability to men with her worth causes so, so much misery. I read one woman's response to this and it struck me. This resonates with me.

Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Something's lost but something's gained. In living every day." - Both Sides Now. I trained Thomas there, a small pup learning how to live with me on trails through a pine forest. I had no idea I'd never see it again. But still - still. I ache for Montana. It's an enduring loss, a heavy price I paid to gain something profoundly valuable - myself and my life. But I still chase the mountains. I know I'll find them again. I just don't know where, or when. Trailheadcase: Nature of the Beast, revisited: The literary edition
http://trailheadcase.blogspot.com/2010/11/nature-of-beast-revisited-literary.html
Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Nature of the Beast, revisited: The literary edition. An out-of-the-ordinary dog book? I'm all ears.". Domesticated animals, by definition, reside deeply within the human world. When we refrain from projecting too many human anxieties, feelings or needs onto a companion animal, we honor their animal nature and allow them to live their lives. I believe the same is true with wildlife. The documentary Raising Sancho, and my good friend Carolina Vargas. I follow Katz’s blog. Via Fa...
