My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: On the way to an unenviable record
http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-way-to-unenviable-record.html
My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Thursday, July 23, 2015. On the way to an unenviable record. We are on the way to an unenviable record in the St. John's region. Its been a cold month so far with no summer in sight. It doesn't look good going forward into the end of the month either. It means we'll likely log the coldest July on record. That's about all one can say because until someone can do something about the weather we may as well . Cape St. F...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Top 10 paddles of 2014 - #2. The weekend of June 7th saw me at the old community of Keels in Bonavista Bay. I was by myself as no one else was took the bait of vast numbers of reported icebergs. A three hour drive from home saw me at Backside Cove looking out over a horizon filled with icebergs. I worked myself out to the northwest extremity of the main pack and then . I padded back to take...

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Kabloona in the Yellow Kayak" - a book review. Don subsequently passed away. It limits my assessment of this part of Victoria's Arctic experience as a toxic experience for her. I'll leave it at that. Victoria's book also recounts her 1991 and 1992 trip with Don and Fred. I knew the plot from reading Don's book but I wanted to get her side of the story. My take away from those chapter...I loo...
My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: First look for whales
http://mynewfoundlandkayakexperience.blogspot.com/2015/08/first-look-for-whales.html
My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Monday, August 3, 2015. First look for whales. I hadn't heard anything about whales being around but thought we might get lucky in Tors Cove. Off shore sit the islands of the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve and I figured even if we didn't see any whales we'd be among the thousands of sea birds that nest there. I joined Clyde, Dave, Derek, Gary, Hazen and Shane to make it a group of seven. Emerging at the south end of Gre...
My Newfoundland Kayak Experience: August 2010

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Monday, August 30, 2010. No room at the inn. Kayakers need access to the sea to put-in, take-out and get off the water in an emergency. Kayak camping also requires a level area and, usually, potable water. Even in Newfoundland with its thousands of miles of coast, beachfront property is being gobbled up. Its getting harder to find wilderness campsites that hasn't been claimed by someone building a cabin. It was full moo...

MarySue's Front Porch: December 2012
http://simplymarysue.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Sustainability is the key to all facets of life.whether it be farming and gardening, camping and kayaking, or simply living on this planet from day to day. Campers, hikers, and lovers of the outdoors have been doing it for years. We call it 'leave no trace'. Slow down for a moment and sit a spell in the rocker on the front porch as I do my best to return my own life to those simpler times. Enjoy your visit, come back as often as you like, and feel free to bring a friend every now and again. You stayed wi...
"Kayaking Dreamin": “On Deck In Newfoundland"

8220;Middle Cove Newfoundland". Current Time On The Rock. Wednesday, February 29, 2012. 8220;On Deck In Newfoundland". I think I put them there when surfing one time), and I plastic sealable bag for camera or whatever. Having a clear back deck also makes rescuing operations and re-entering in assisted rescues easier. Maybe having two clear decks is what you like, and good for you on that. If I’m worried about maps or map bags when on a trip, the deckbag provides excellent attachment points for a ma...

Just Yakkin' . . . About paddling - or anything else. Thursday, March 26, 2015. One Ring to Rule Them All . . . I've been riding the Pug Ops for three months now and I've come to the realization that, during this time, I may have used the large front chain ring less than a handful of times! But in choosing to do, this I would be losing some of my lower range gears. Enter the Wolf Tooth 42t GC. A rear cog that is basically the size of a small frisbee! Stay tuned for that! The Pug Ops in stock form! I orde...

Just Yakkin' . . . About paddling - or anything else. Monday, May 12, 2014. Black Pearl Retrofit Project - Complete. On April 14, I made the first cut on this latest project. Exactly four weeks later, on May 12, the Black Pearl came out of drydock, i.e. The attic and back into the light of day! The most notable changes to the "updated" Black Pearl are a standard keyhole cockpit, a retractable skeg and a new, low luster paint job! And here's a few snaps to show how things turned out. Full view of deck!

Just Yakkin' . . . About paddling - or anything else. Monday, October 22, 2012. Point Bennett Project - Holes and Hatches. What I had to contend with! I started with the front hatch. I simply marked and cut out the hole. I made the baseplate for the hatch out of 4mm marine ply. Then I started filling in the recess with vertical strips. Getting ready for strips. Almost all the way 'round. I decided to join the compass recess with the hatch for better drainage - and it looks cooler! Compass laid in place.

Newfoundland Kayakoholic: 2015: Post 35 – Bell Island
http://nlkayakoholic.blogspot.com/2015/07/2015-post-35-bell-island.html
If you just go for a paddle than you can stop thinking about wanting to go for a paddle. Sunday, July 26, 2015. 2015: Post 35 – Bell Island. Later last night Tony suggested a longish paddle from St. Philips to Bauline and back. I looked at the map, looked at the weather. it would be about thirty kilometers with the first half into a forecasted fifteen kilometer northerly wind. We made the crossing over to Dominion Pier where I laid my hand on one of the old piles. Tony (the geologist) found a rock with f...
Newfoundland Kayakoholic: January 2011
http://nlkayakoholic.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
If you just go for a paddle than you can stop thinking about wanting to go for a paddle. Saturday, January 1, 2011. 2011: Post 1 - Happy New Kayaking Year. Maybe I need to have another talk with my financial adviser. I will paddle this year with these concrete and soft goals in mind. I will feel disappointed if I cannot get in the camping trips. I will not feel overly disappointed if I cannot reach my soft goals, although I will endeavour to reach them. I hope 2011 is a good kayaking year for everybody.

My Newfoundland Kayak Experience
My Newfoundland Kayak Experience. Happiness is an inside job." - William Arthur Ward. Sunday, April 8, 2018. Saturday evening I sent mail out to 12 of my paddle mates. Shane was the first to reply positively. Then a stream of declines came in but in Sunday morning Cathy and Gary were in making it a foursome. We've been woeful getting on the water this winter but with spring on the way hopefully we be paddling more frequently. It was high water meaning we could get through passageways and channels. Brian,...
