Hiking Hot: June 2013
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Thursday, June 20, 2013. Disco Fireflies on Clear Creek Trail. I haven't posted here much, but I've been hiking quite a bit. I've gotten in the habit of hiking a particular three-mile loop along Clear Creek in the evenings several times a week. It takes me a bit under an hour and a half ordinarily, and it's a good workout and a lovely trail. Tonight I brought my camera with me. It's a modest little camera but it has video capability, and I hoped that it would pick up...

Hiking Hot: Bird Mountain, Frozen Head State Park
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2013/03/bird-mountain-frozen-head-state-park.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Sunday, March 17, 2013. Bird Mountain, Frozen Head State Park. The weather turned so warm and sunny yesterday, and the rain held off, that I decided to go hiking. At first I'd intended to hike River Bluff. It's for birders, but it's got better directions to the park than other sites. If you do visit, though, keep in mind that Flat Fork Road is NOT marked. Above: a nice trail seat, polished smooth from hundreds of tired bottoms. While I rested, I took out my phone to chec...

Hiking Hot: New boots!
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2013/03/new-boots.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Sunday, March 24, 2013. The Danner Talus hiking boots I bought last year just aren't working for me. They keep giving me blisters. So I finally decided it was time to replace them. I bought a pair of Merrell Moab Ventilator shoes and tried them out on the trail this weekend. We had cool and rainy weather this weekend. Saturday I hiked the River Bluff trail above the dam, which I posted about last spring. The boots did great for me on Saturday. I wore wool hiking sock...

Hiking Hot: December 2012
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Thursday, December 6, 2012. Observation Point, November/December. Speaking of which, here are a few pix from the various trips I've taken in the last several weeks. Above is the trail where it splits. Both trails go up to Observation Point. The right one is a bit less steep and slightly longer. I'm lazy and usually go up the right branch and come back by the other branch. There's a gazebo at the top of the hill, behind the bench. They're repairing it, obviously. I like t...

Hiking Hot: August 2012
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Tongass National Forest, Alaska. Last week I was on an Alaskan cruise, which was truly awesome (if you're interested, I've got a detailed post and lots of pictures up on my regular blog. One of our excursions was a roughly four-mile hike in the Tongass National Forest to see the Monholland Glacier. I think the trail we took was East Glacier Trail as shown on the map to the left, but I can't swear to it. I went with my brother Richard. In the m...

Hiking Hot: River Bluff Trail
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2012/04/river-bluff-trail.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Saturday, April 14, 2012. So after my last post, I went out to Walmart and just bought a daypack. It was the only pack they carried that was made for women and really it's bigger than I wanted, but it was only twenty bucks and it isn't pink. (It's blue.). Then I thought, why not? I went to the right when the trail forked, knowing that that would take me up a steep climb to the top of the ridge, and knowing also that once I was at the top I would have a lovely stroll and ...

Hiking Hot: July 2012
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Sunday, July 8, 2012. I bought a T-shirt the other day that I found in the sports section of the store. It was advertised as a wicking material that would keep me dry and cool when I'm being active. So I thought maybe the material would at least not show great big sweat stains like a cotton shirt. But when I got home and stripped it off, there were sweat stains everywhere the shirt had touched my skin. I checked the tag to see what this miracle material was, so I...100% ...

Hiking Hot: June 2012
http://hikinghot.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Hitting the trail in high summer. Thursday, June 28, 2012. Last night was the last under-100-degrees day we're going to have for a while, so after work I went out to Clear Creek for a quick hike. I needed to check out part of the Clear Creek Trail for my book (and as it turned out, it was a good thing I did check, because I had the layout of the area all messed up in my head). Next I need to hike Dyer Hollow Trail, which is not far from the gristmill. I would have hiked it last night, but it was gett...

What Would Ed Do?: In The Canyon
http://whatwoulded.blogspot.com/2013/01/in-canyon.html
Sunday, January 13, 2013. A friend emailed last week to ask if I wanted to join her on a lengthy hike in Topanga State Park, and it was a no brainer—I hadn’t seen her in eons, I hadn’t been to Topanga SP in eons, and I still hadn’t visited her new home in the canyon. But I’ll get there, I will. Sometimes hiking is about perspiration, and sometimes it’s about inspiration. On this particular sunny, cool January morning, it was both.
