I recently read two books – one based on the BBC documentary “ The Story of India. 8221; by Indophile Michael Wood and Nine Lives by William Dalrymple (about “finding the sacred in modern India”). Books about the history of India are often reduced to books about “the Idea of India.” For the most part, authors seem completely unaware of this tendency with the exception of Sunil Khilnani. Having said that - there are two things that my brother and I bonded over as kids growing up in a house with just (gasp) one televesion. one was tennis and the other was a most fabulous mini-series called Bodyline.
