As I've started developing apps this way, I've been really excited by the results. The frustrations and foreboding sense of "this doesn't feel right" I found developing rich client apps with server side MVC is completely gone. MysteryCoder: September 2008

http://mysterycoder.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 13, 2008. Ruby in the browser at Rubyconf. Just got the news this week that my submission on ruby in the browser. Has been accepted for Rubyconf. This looks like an awesome conference and I am really psyched to be included. It is also inspiring me to do some more work on rubyjs on rails and try to finish up an activeresource client. I'll be hacking on that in whatever free time I have available this weekend. I'm also thrilled that I get to be part of another dialogue session.

MysteryCoder: March 2011

http://mysterycoder.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 13, 2011. CoffeeScript Backbone.js Rails = Superfantasticalness. Lately I've been working on application by writing the front end in CoffeeScript. And the back end in Rails. A few people have asked me about it and so I thought I'd share my experience so far. I don't intend this to be a Backbone.js guide, the excellent documentation is where to go for that. But I'll briefly touch on my experience with the different pieces I've used thus far. Though I dig backbone a lot, it's still possible o...

MysteryCoder: October 2008

http://mysterycoder.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 18, 2008. Fun" with Hook Methods in Ruby. Thou Shalt Always Delegate to the Previous Implementation. The reason this is important is that when you implement a hook method, you can easily step on someone else who had implemented it for another reason. Using the rails alias method chain will normally take care of this for you, but because this code loads before rails they didn't have that option and had not done the right thing and delegated explicitly. Class inheritable accessor :foo.

MysteryCoder: JSpec tests running in CI

http://mysterycoder.blogspot.com/2010/07/jspec-tests-running-in-ci.html

Wednesday, July 14, 2010. JSpec tests running in CI. It's actually fairly simple: I'm using the capybara selenium driver to run the JSpec tests and grab the results from the DOM when they finish. Here's the testcase:. From here, running it under CI is trivial. In fact I didn't have to do anything at all, the tests was found by rake test:integrations and ran (and passed! In the next build. Most of the heavy lifting is done by capybara and selenium-webdriver. July 15, 2010 at 8:02 AM. Is on sale now! Bring...

MysteryCoder: 2 easy things you can screw up in backbone

http://mysterycoder.blogspot.com/2011/05/2-easy-things-you-can-screw-up-in.html

Sunday, May 15, 2011. 2 easy things you can screw up in backbone. Don't have multiple views using the same element. This one I did early on in my backbone days the first time I had one view that created another view. Imagine some code like the following:. Beware model defaults that initialize complex attributes. The problem here is what happens when you create a second Foo. Turns out backbone does a shallow clone of defaults, which means the same array object in memory is used for both. This spec...Turns...

Coffee, Code and Candor. Tech talk with a dash of opinion and caffeine. Update on some things. Posted on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 by javamate. One thing I will make note of in the hope that it will be useful to someone else, is that if you are working with Grails and wanting to deploy a WAR to some servlet container that only implements Servlet Specification 2.3 you can do the following:. Grails -Dservlet.version=2.3 war. Rails Tip: Overriding Defaults in ActiveRecord. Perhaps you want a model to represen...

BitBasher: Tribe Level Ceremonies

http://esumerfield.blogspot.com/2015/01/tribe-level-ceremonies.html

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. We take new words from Spotify to describe a scaled agile organization. Tribes contain squads which deliver features. Guilds share subjects and Chapters share skills. This is about extending traditional Agile to optimize for larger teams. Scrum talks of teams with daily Stand Ups and a Scrum of Scums to share between teams. It assumes that information is shared between teams via a Scrum of Scrums representative but this doesn't really work. We now have a definition:.

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. Grand Rapids Give Camp - Cincinnati Satelite - Retrospective. What an excellent time, hanging with friends, meeting new people and the opportunity to help out some charities at the same time. I first heard about Give Camp when Mike Wood. Now that it is over, everyone is talking about doing our own in Cincinnati next year so here are some memories to remind us. Thanks everyone, you rock, Rob Biedenharn. It was great working with the Grand Rapids team, Chris Woodruff.

BitBasher: Ruby Warrior - Trying Again

http://esumerfield.blogspot.com/2013/08/ruby-warrior-trying-again.html

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. Ruby Warrior - Trying Again. It is clear that a solution to a problem like this can't just be imagined out of thin air. I am just not that smart. Just writing if statements was satisfying and productive to start with but once level 7 hit and I had to change direction there was no alternative but to throw everything away and start again. With this approach, I am making headway but can only solve level 2 because I haven't reimplemented the resting process yet. Walk = Wa...

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. Ruby, SSL and Untrusted Certs. It has been a long time since focusing exclusively on writing Ruby code. So much fun. The last two years have been groovy only which is a great language but there is something pure and simple about Ruby that just takes your breath away. Ruby 1.8.7. Irb(main):001:0 require "net/https" # = true # irb(main):020:0 h = Net: HTTP.new("YOUR SSL SERVER",443) # = #. Factory = SOAP: WSDLDriverFactory.new("#{@url}? The problem was that there is no ...

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. Kanban - A small practice project. A few months ago I completed my first Kanban. Project. The team was small and the introduction informal but it went well. The team comprised 5 people. A technical manager, 3 web developers and me. They managed many projects simultaneously which resulted in a great deal of task switching for the developers. The project was estimated at 2 weeks and involved a UI replacement of an existing web application. A couple of minor business...

BitBasher: Waterfall Disease - Symtoms, History and a Cure

http://esumerfield.blogspot.com/2013/08/waterfall-disease-symtoms-history-and.html

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. Waterfall Disease - Symtoms, History and a Cure. It is easy to spot the symptoms in aggressive cases but can present in subtle ways as well. It effects individuals and teams and is communicable. The cure is long and slow but the young heal much faster. If you have been infected with this disease for more than 20 years, the chances of a full recovery is slim. An infected team or programmer assumes that the deadline means they will have to hack in a bad fix, even when t...

BitBasher: Ruby Warrior - Game Emulation

http://esumerfield.blogspot.com/2013/08/ruby-warrior-game-emulation.html

Ed Sumerfield's musings. Life rocks. Ruby Warrior - Game Emulation. Emulating the black box behavior allows us to build tests that prove your code works, as long, as the emulation remains close to the real thing. The Ruby Warrior runtime has features within it, that I do not know yet since I am still at level 7. The output from my game emulator looks nice and allows me to great new alternative levels that exercise all the features of my player that I wish to. The simple Game runner. Make your own badge h...
