Steps Toward a Big Idea Syllabus – My Teaching Notebook
http://myteachingnotebook.com/index.php/2015/08/28/rethinking-the-syllabus
Steps Toward a Big Idea Syllabus. August 28, 2015. Go to lunch with students. Or just talk to them. Discover who they are and remind yourself what it is to be a student. It won’t take long to remember that they are wrestling with some really fundamental questions about life. Who am I? What am I going to do? Am I going to make it? How do I find meaning and significance in life? Dwell in some deep thought. Look at your syllabus. Line by line, and ask yourself, “How does this help them get there? As Neil Po...
The Sleeper – My Teaching Notebook
http://myteachingnotebook.com/index.php/2015/08/26/the-sleeper
August 26, 2015. I’m pretty sensitive to student reactions in my classes. For better or worse, I really feed off of them. I had one student who was just always sleeping. Or if he wasn’t sleeping he was giving me this strange dreadful look. And here I was, armed with a dazzling HD screen with 2 million 73 thousand 600 points of light and a laser pointer. And I just couldn’t get through to him. Actually, I had 4 Screens. But sometimes I would just get mad. Who does he think he is? And under appreciated by ...
My Journey to the Joy of Learning – My Teaching Notebook
http://myteachingnotebook.com/index.php/2015/08/29/my-journey-to-the-joy-of-learning
My Journey to the Joy of Learning. August 29, 2015. I have always been deeply concerned about the quality of teaching and learning we provide for our students. For years, I preached the power and potential of technologies and techniques to transform a classroom. But technologies and techniques do not always work. I slipped into a funk. I felt disconnected from my students. I didn’t know who they were anymore. So I decided to get to know them. There is just one rule of lunch: No small talk. September 1, 2...

Skip to primary navigation. Skip to primary sidebar. Teaching in Higher Ed. How to be sure your students stay asleep, as you wake up. August 31, 2016. As most of you who have been listening to the Teaching in Higher Ed for a while already know, I’m a huge fan of podcasts. I still chuckle when I recall this segment of This American Life. When Alex Bloomberg shares about his Nielsen families fallacy, as well as the woman who received a special gift from trained monkeys. And who could forget:. I came across...

myteachinglives | 45 Years in Public Education
45 Years in Public Education. It took me a while to read Aldo’s signal. It was the fall of 1968 and I was starting my first full year of teaching eighth grade English at I.S. 292 in Brooklyn’s East New York. The once mainly Jewish neighborhood of the Gershwin brothers, Danny Kaye and Fortunoff’s on Livonia Avenue had been steamrolled as a result of blockbusting and by the time Aldo sat drumming on the desk in the back of my classroom 292 was 99% Black and Puerto Rican. Aldo pointed to a small dresser, In...

Mental Wellbeing 4u | Reflections of a Wellbeing Coach…….
Reflections of a Wellbeing Coach……. April 6, 2012. Welcome to the reflections of a coach where I share with you my teachable moments……. Definition: A teachable moment is an unplanned opportunity that arises in the classroom where a teacher has an ideal chance to offer insight to his or her students. Taking this tangent is worthwhile because it is organically timed to maximize impact on the students. Ultimately, the teachable moment could evolve into a full-blown lesson plan or unit of instruction. Jobles...

Notes of a Pre-Service English Teacher | the art of pedagogy
Notes of a Pre-Service English Teacher. The art of pedagogy. Sharing the love of technology. August 6, 2013. I haven’t blogged in a couple months. I’ve spent the summer making healthy life choices and finding stability before my last year of college. The time off has really been a blessing. In order to bring my blog back to life, I would like to talk about one of my favorite subjects: technology. Some blame video games and text messaging for dumbing down our next generation and making children lazy.
