Found at Te Mata Trust Park, Havelock North on October 7th, 2000. This fungus is 1-2mm in diameter and no more than 1mm high. Grows on dead wood and appears as groups of tiny little yellow dots on the surface. Too small to be of interest. Chlorociboria Aeruginascens (Blue stain mushroom). This is a cup shaped mushroom when young then expands into a disc with age. This specimen was found at Te Mata Trust park in September 2003. Different people react differently to different mushrooms.

As the name of this family suggests, they look like bird nests, complete with the eggs which in this case are called 'peridioles', these are usually flat like capsicum seeds and carry the spores within them. They can be found growing on the ground, dung or wood. Usually minute in size. Found on the Manawatu Gorge Track growing on a twig! End of July, 2000. Less than 1cm in diameter and height. Even smaller when young. The exterior wall of the cup shape is brown in colour with a somewhat rough texture.

This is a VERY large and diverse family! It's members all have light spore print colours. They do not have a cup or a volva at the base of the stem which is mostly present except a few individuals do lack the stem. In this group the caps are sometimes depressed or flat. They all have whitish spore prints. No veil, (ring around the stalk), or volva, (cup at the base of the stem) present. Found mostly growing from the ground but a few grow on wood. This is a group of very tough textured mushrooms. Some look like stones as in Daldinia and others are coral like in appearance and can be confused for twigs as in Xylaria. Daldinia Concentrica (Charcoal fungus). Also called `King Alfred's` cake. Found throughout July, 2000 at Te Mata Trust Park in Havelock North, Manawatu Gorge in Palmerston North and Boundary Stream, growing on dead wood. Xylaria Hypoxylon (Candle snuff fungus). Found in both Pamerston North and Havelock North through out July, 2000.

Well, this is me! My name is Aiman Samy, and I live in Hawkes Bay In New Zealand. My interest in mushrooms started years ago at university when I attended a two week course in growing Oyster Mushrooms. I found them very fascinating. After moving to New Zealand I decided to go out to the bush and see what mushrooms are out there, so I did, and it hasn't stopped. I am originally from Egypt. I studied Horticulture in Cairo after which I moved to New Zealand in 1995 and have been here ever since.

Found at Yeoman's Track on October 10, 2000. Also found at Boundary Stream Reserve on November 11, 2000. This mushroom is about 1-3cm wide, the widest being when young. At maturity the cup shape expands into a disc. It grows on a stem which is no higher than about 1cm. Black inside and out with paler coloured flesh (in cross section). The inside of the cup is smooth while the outer surface is clearly wrinkled. Unknown, too small and leathery to be of value. Best Gourmet Mushrooms in New Zealand.
