Reflections on the coupling of pain and joy, motherhood, and Down syndrome. 2014: The Year of the Glide? The Words We Use →. March 20, 2014. Not too sick to hug the bear at the pediatrician’s office. So this is what it’s like when it’s not like this all the time…. That’s what I pondered before falling asleep the night before last. Raphael had been well more than not for long stretches over the past year, so when he got sick this time, it no longer fit our newer new normal. I’m appreciative every day.

Reflections on the coupling of pain and joy, motherhood, and Down syndrome. The Words We Use. October is… (31 for 21) →. Don’t limit me. February 25, 2015. My son is in kindergarten. He loves his school, and so do I. But I am already seeing how his school wants to keep expectations low for him due to his diagnosis, presumably so the educators don’t have to put as much effort in to accommodate his special needs and help him succeed in life. Don’t box me in. When I grow up…. At first, I was caught off guar...

Reflections on the coupling of pain and joy, motherhood, and Down syndrome. Don’t limit me →. The Words We Use. October 24, 2014. He has a disability, my nephew blurted to my neighbor when we stopped at the corner by her house to say, Hi. He was trying to explain why my boy, Raphael, sat in the buggy trailing my bike, while he and my older son were sporting two-wheelers around the block. My nephew’s words startled me. I wondered why we feel compelled to explain differences at all. A Dolphin’s Tale 2.

Reflections on the coupling of pain and joy, motherhood, and Down syndrome. Newer posts →. October is… (31 for 21). October 2, 2015. October is a new beginning. September sucks. Not completely, but September can be truly anxiety producing. School has begun, way too many activities start, and for many of us, there are the important Jewish holidays, which if you do them right and work hard at making amends, they take up a ridiculous amount of time and brain space. This boy has changed my life. My son is in...

Stories about family, faith & farm. Why are we so afraid of Down syndrome? January 7, 2014. The grandfatherly man smiled at Kate from the cart in front of us at the grocery store. 8220;Well, you’re just. 8221; he gushed. Kate did what she usually does (if she’s had a nap) and flirted back. Her toothy smile took over her cheeks and her almond eyes turned into half-moon slivers bright enough to light up the night sky. Was that what I was afraid of the day she was born? Well, of course not. What I was afrai...
