Już sama nazwa, zupełnie niesłusznie, może budzić złe skojarzenia, albowiem to co oślizgłe nie cieszy się specjalnymi względami wśród ludzi. A jednak są to fascynujące organizmy. Czym zatem są śluzowce? W tłumaczeniu oznaczało by "śluzo-grzyby", z kolei Mycetozoa. Można by tłumaczyć jako "grzybo-zwierze".

Myxomycetes meliputi organisme yang tidak mengandung klorofil, yang secara filogenetik tergolong ke dalam organisme yang sangat sederhana. Dalam keadaan vegetatif tubuhnya berupa massa protoplasma telanjang yang bergerak sebagai amoeba yang disebut plasmodium dengan cara hidup sebagai saprofit atau seperti hewan.
