Nothing Shiny: July 2009
http://nothingshiny.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
The Appropriate Design Philosophy for Building a Cottage Life. Friday, July 31, 2009. So, you want to build your own cottage. When one hears "I want to build my own cottage", there are three ways to interpret the sentiment: either the person wants to do the construction herself, or the person wants to act as her own general contractor, or the person will be hiring a "professional" residential builder to build her cottage. But the advice to be given for any of these notions is the same,. Is just a lovely ...

Nothing Shiny: Allen wrenches
http://nothingshiny.blogspot.com/2009/10/blog-post.html
The Appropriate Design Philosophy for Building a Cottage Life. Monday, October 5, 2009. As all cottagers know, the Allen wrench is an indispensible part of one's tool chest but it can be difficult to locate on a moment's notice. It is, therefore, suggested that when purchasing your set of Allen wrenches, you buy one like this. If you are one of the few who is unfamiliar with this tiny wrench, then just think about how much trouble. Really enjoyed your post. Reminded me of France in. Used Allen Wrench as.

Nothing Shiny: Tongue and groove panelling (part 1)
http://nothingshiny.blogspot.com/2009/10/tongue-and-groove-panelling-part-1.html
The Appropriate Design Philosophy for Building a Cottage Life. Thursday, October 8, 2009. Tongue and groove panelling (part 1). As far as wall coverings go, there is nothing so uncottagey as gypsum board (e.g., Sheetrock). At its best it is a poor imitation of plaster, at its worst it is . . . just awful. Fortunately, there are many other wall coverings. That cottagers may choose from, a favorite being wood panelling. (Let me be clear, wood panelling does not mean wood-. 5 Due to the natural irregularity...

Nothing Shiny: September 2009
http://nothingshiny.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
The Appropriate Design Philosophy for Building a Cottage Life. Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Back before there were books (i.e., things from the olden days which contained lots of information and which worked even if there was no electricity and which didn't require a $30/mo subscription service to access them) on this subject, one had to invent one's method of connecting steel-to-steel, steel-to-concrete, steel-to-wood, etc. Monday, September 28, 2009. Nothing Shiny: Recessed ceramic soap and shampoo shelves
http://nothingshiny.blogspot.com/2009/11/recessed-ceramic-soap-and-shampoo.html
The Appropriate Design Philosophy for Building a Cottage Life. Sunday, November 22, 2009. Recessed ceramic soap and shampoo shelves. Apparently it is better to think of and then plan the installation of your recessed soap and shampoo shelves for your shower stall prior to tiling your shower stall. If, however, you do this afterwards it will be a much more challenging, time-consuming, expensive and perhaps more rewarding exercise. . . . Or, perhaps not. Approximately two-thirds of the way down the page).

Nothing Shiny: Lumber Liquidators -- You get what you pay for, kind of
http://nothingshiny.blogspot.com/2009/10/lumber-liquidators-you-get-what-you-pay.html
The Appropriate Design Philosophy for Building a Cottage Life. Sunday, October 25, 2009. Lumber Liquidators - You get what you pay for, kind of. In continuation of the previous posts on wood panelling, let's turn our attention to tongue and groove boards (that's "tongue" not "tung". Which brings me to two criteria near and dear to every cottager's heart: time and money, and the spending as little of each as is necessary. And countersunk screws must be filled with putty and sanded. Ceiling fans - restored.

Getting to Home Sweet Home: Almost there?
http://buildingfourwalls.blogspot.com/2012/09/almost-there.html
Getting to Home Sweet Home. Our home building process. Sunday, September 23, 2012. The outside still needs a lot of work. Our contractor gave us an estimate to put in the driveway that made me want to cry, so we are going to seek other estimates. Wanna give me an estimate? So, you probably want to know what the status of the inside is? The master bathroom is being tiled. The boys' room. I drew the waves and have a great idea for a chalkboard. Does the contractor know how to apply it? In by November 1st?
