Travel, science, yum-yum balls and volunteering in northern Laos. October 14, 2016. October 14, 2016. A Gentlemen Never Tells. Brief photo snap halfway along our ‘short’ 40km ride to Kamu Lodge. Sick mustache is for charity purposes. Hunt for the Gentle-people. Power negligible. Brakes non-existent. A bad mustache, ill-fitting tie and a very practical, but non-classic XR250 went together well I thought. The Lao were riding a mix of beautifully restored 90cc Honda Cubs. The group tours Luang Prabang.

Travel, science, yum-yum balls and volunteering in northern Laos. August 7, 2016. August 9, 2016. A day at the beach. A common question I get asked here is, “Do you eat dog”? In short, between all this noise, humidity, monster storms every few nights and roosters crowing from 4am, sleep has been somewhat intermittent. Still, it has given me plenty of time to wonder, at 2am as the neighbour’s dog is in the 30th minute of barking at its own tail, why no one has eaten it yet? Down shaded paths and across ba...

Travel, science, yum-yum balls and volunteering in northern Laos. September 30, 2016. The Water of Life: Pt 1. A spirit totem protects the rice fields from malevolent spirits. Early this morning I was awoken by a knocking sound. It was still dark, and unusually. The difficulties in coping with so much water in so short a time were apparent. Happier days before the flood. After the flood, a barren wasteland. That would take us upriver. The elephants are left to their own devices today. We set off along a ...

Travel, science, yum-yum balls and volunteering in northern Laos. August 17, 2016. August 22, 2016. Wet Season Reflections and Party Fish Day! The changes in the landscape during the beginning of the wet season are quite enchanting. Every day on the way to work we pass either the Nam Khan or the mighty Mekong River and have delighted in seeing the levels increase notably each day. All of the bamboo bridges have been washed away, to be built again at the end of the season. Until next season, anyway. The a...

Travel, science, yum-yum balls and volunteering in northern Laos. December 27, 2016. Winter Solstice in Laos. One of the teachers suggested Rachel should wear a traditional Hmong costume, I did my part and wore a Lao style shirt. By the end of lunch, things were starti...

Travel, science, yum-yum balls and volunteering in northern Laos. September 5, 2016. September 5, 2016. Stranger in a Strange Land. Over 700 years ago, King Mangrai ruled the unified Tai city states in northern Lanna, an area of SE Asia that covers the northern provinces of modern Thailand and Laos. An ambitious fellow, King Mangrai successfully. Wait what, Thailand! What happened to Laos? Well, earlier that day Rachel and I boarded a Lao Airlines flight from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai.
