Hopefully Interesting: Important Issues: Immigration
http://hopefullyintersting.blogspot.com/2012/03/important-issues-immigration.html
Tuesday, March 20, 2012. The most important policy issue I see in the US right now where thing aren't currently going the way I'd like is immigration. It seems to me that we ought to be allowing much more immigration into this country, that this would give some net benefits to the US, and that it would be a huge boon for those allowed to immigrate. At one point the US let many more immigrants in than it does today. But panic about foreign anarchists. Form of foreign aid per dollar, and also far larger.

Programming languages: Comparative Spookiness - Somewhat

Programming languages: Comparative Spookiness - Somewhat. Apr 11th, 2010. Programming languages: Comparative Spookiness. This is going to be a long, rambling, nerdy post. Non-CS people can safely TLDR it. Writing a lot of haskell recently has got me thinking about spooky things in programming languages. This is not theoretically. It reminds me very much of first encountering perl - you remember, you were blown away, totally amazed, dumbfounded at how much expressive power could be packed into such a smal...

"zero tolerance" in schools - so glad to finally be failing

So glad to finally be failing. Falling for the first time. Zero tolerance" in schools. Jan 27th, 2010 at 12:36 AM. How come people successfully get all up in arms about ridiculous punishments for students in schools (month-long suspensions for having aspirin in a backpack, that sort of thing), when due process is denied for a teacher as in this story from The New Yorker piece on "rubber rooms". Where's the outrage here? 15 comments Leave a comment. Jan 27th, 2010 06:24 am (UTC). I read the article and se...

Rainwater - in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni. Laquo; previous entry. Next entry ». Jan 25th, 2007 03:48 pm. If a person uses, at most, 5 gallons of water/day, then one person would use only about 2,000 gallons/year. A house roof of about 40'X40' could catch enough water for 22 people for a year. Jan 26th, 2007 09:13 pm (UTC). It makes a neat fire-suppression system, too. Others. Were experimenting with it a century and a half ago. Jan 29th, 2007 06:17 pm (UTC). The castle is neat, thanks!

Graduation - in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni. Laquo; previous entry. Aug 4th, 2007 04:33 pm. I've been super quiet on this space. But the reason is quite exciting! I'm graduating in a week with my BA! Pending completion of four papers and a presentation. Whee! My degree is in interdisciplinary studies. What does that mean? So I just wanted to update and share my exhilaration. I started the degree process in 1996, 11 years ago, and am very happy to be completing it now! Aug 5th, 2007 06:26 am (UTC).
