We left Winter Park on July 12 heading to Alaska. Our first stop would be Tallahassee to visit Amy/Reid and the grandkids. Our planned route would be to head north to Montgomery, Al, St Louis, Mo and on to Minneapolis, Mn, Fargo ND and into Canada near Winnipeg. We made it to Alaska on July 27th. July 29 - Train to Denali

Inside of the train were two levels -the top was the dome and the bottom was a restaurant. There was a bartender on every car. The train ran along the river where we saw a number of rafters in the rapids. Log cabins were built by miners and prospectors to shelter them from the elements. The men were called sourdoughs because they ate sourdough bread and often smelled of sourdough. View from the train. The train followed the edge of the canyon walls often above the river. July 18th - Iowa

Spent the morning in Amana Iowa. It's a small community started by the Amish, but didn't see one buggy or any people dressed in the Amish attire. Did see the Amana factory where they make appliances. This barn was on the edge of town. For some reason it has grape vines growing on the outside walls. There are several vineyard locally, making wine from local grapes, rhubarb, raspberry, strawberry, etc. Along the way across Iowa are cornfields, soy bean fields and several windmill farms. July 14th - Alabama.

The original Mile Zero Monument is downtown Dawson's Creek on the Alaska Highway - just 1523 miles to Fairbanks. The Dawson's Creek Museum has lots of great exhibits from fashion of that time, a settler's cabin, a complete telegraph office, and lots of animals, stuffed, of course, We purchased the DVD about the building of the highway, and will loan it to anyone who wants to enjoy it. Rochfort Bridge Trestle in Alberta. We came upon this train trestle unexpectedly, while driving north of Edmonton. This trestle is one of the longest wooden bridge trestles in North America if not the longest. It is 110 feet high and crosses over the Paddle River and Hwy 43. Quite a spectacular sight.
