Narrowboat Star: June 2012
http://narrowboatstar.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, 30 June 2012. The Aire is clear - now! The calm after the storm: Castleford flood lock. Just a week ago towns in this part of Yorkshire were devastated by massive floods after a month's rainfall fell in just 24 hours. Castleford is where the rivers that had been overwhelmed by this deluge meet - the Calder and Hebble joining the River Aire to flow through the town. Take a look at these. A swept away ladder five feet up a post. Of all the moorings in all the world. We pulled in to a gap in the l...

Narrowboat Star: Two days in Manchester
http://narrowboatstar.blogspot.com/2012/07/two-days-in-manchester.html
Thursday, 19 July 2012. Two days in Manchester. And it's only rained on one of them! We've spent a relaxing couple of days in Castlefield Basin, right in the heart of the city. You couldn't pay to get a better location for a visit – and of course as boaters we don't have to. So I won't grumble too much about the slightly dishevelled look of the place compared to last time we were here. Some weeding and cleaning is badly needed. Manchester has always been a bright place.even when it was dark and dirty...

Narrowboat Star: July 2011
http://narrowboatstar.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, 31 July 2011. Stoke is so sad. I always find Stoke a fascinating but sad and sorry place to boat through. Fascinating because there are so many remnants of its old industries - the bottle kilns, the wharves, the ruined brick warehouses. Sad because that's all they are - remnants. People have told me of cruising through the town when steel furnaces spat fire along the canal and the kilns belched smoke. What a sight that must have been! Granny gets her fix. We set off at 10 am, reached Stoke on Tre...

Narrowboat Star: January 2012
http://narrowboatstar.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 15 January 2012. And then there were doors. A day of striving with my assortment of power tools has produced some not half bad cupboard doors if I say so myself. They're panelled using frames of 6mm ply glued to a backboard of 12mm ply and then finished with a mitred moulding inside. The only problem was that I needed more clamps than a clamp factory to hold each door together while the glue set. Saturday, 14 January 2012. Tuesday, 10 January 2012. An up and down sort of week. Strange business, t...

Narrowboat Star: More second thoughts
http://narrowboatstar.blogspot.com/2012/07/more-second-thoughts.html
Tuesday, 17 July 2012. I'm having a lot of these at the moment. First time around the Bridgewater was dismissed as 'boring' and merited only a couple of paragraphs of blog. Photos, too, were thin on the ground. True, one can tire of the terrain; those endless miles of concrete lined canal passing between the scrubland that was once coalfields but is now being reclaimed by nature. Yet there are things to see. Walkways and interpretation boards guide you through what can be seen. And it's all being tid...

Tormentil narrowboat: April 2009
http://narrowboat-tormentil.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
This is the story of narrowboat Tormentil, how we came to buy her and the adventures we hope to have. Sunday, 5 April 2009. We have a week to get from Sowerby to Burnley, Lancashire (on the Leeds and Liverpool) via the Calder and Hebble, and the Aire and Calder, and have been assured it is possible. As I have said before this canal pace of life is a little difficult to get my head around. Sowerby to Burnley is 40 minutes by car! Labels: Leeds and Liverpool canal. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). We live in Su...

Tormentil narrowboat: June 2009
http://narrowboat-tormentil.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
This is the story of narrowboat Tormentil, how we came to buy her and the adventures we hope to have. Friday, 5 June 2009. The weather was hot and got hotter during the week up to 32C. This was good aclimatisation for my return last weekend when we had such great weather in England. I had half a day to sightsee and managed to get to the Jardin Majorelle which was a lovely quiet rest from the heat. These gardens mix architecture, colour and plants and I got some good pictures. Berbers riding and shooting.

Tormentil narrowboat: The Great Adventure day 7, Wednesday April 15th, To Skipton and beyond
http://narrowboat-tormentil.blogspot.com/2009/05/great-adventure-day-7-wednesday-april.html
This is the story of narrowboat Tormentil, how we came to buy her and the adventures we hope to have. Monday, 18 May 2009. The Great Adventure day 7, Wednesday April 15th, To Skipton and beyond. On the way to Skipton, they were probably responsible for all this as we hired a boat from them all those years ago and still remember enjoying the trip (apart from the swing bridges which I remember me doing last time and they were still just as much a pain). Moored up, I thought that was great. There is a steep...
