Unscientific Thought: June 2010
http://unscientificthought.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Like what you see? Thursday, June 10, 2010. My Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop has been getting slower and slower since I first purchased it new around three years ago. I had assumed that this was due to the inevitable degradation of Windows Vista, but a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 didn't help. When I burned myself on the bottom panel of the laptop, that was a pretty good indication that I should check for an overheating problem. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Like what you see? Friday, December 18, 2009. Anatomy of an Exam. Yesterday, I took the least satisfying exam I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. (Note that this isn't a case of sour grapes. On my part; I scored fine, and my cumulative marks are safely in the 'good range'.). Some of the questions on this 25-question, multiple-choice molecular genetics final included:. Q: "Which domain(s) recognize(s) methylated histone tails? A) Chromo domains b) Bromo domains c) Both Chromo and Bromo domains.

Like what you see? Sunday, February 28, 2010. Chemical Engineering Education, Part One. It occurred to me yesterday that I have no idea what the top ten bulk chemical products in the world are. I cannot connect the common names (limestone, potash) to the most basic of chemical reagents, and I have no idea where or how they are derived. I just barely grasp the general processes that occur in an oil refinery, and I know next to nothing about any other industrially-relevant chemical transformations. Univers...

Like what you see? Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Chemical Engineering Education, Part Two. At a large public research institute such as Penn State, it is all-too-obvious that teaching comes a distant last on the list of priorities. Which is a real shame. what happened to the original Land Grant. Rationale that founded the place? In the course of advising friends-of-friends and just talking to people casually, I come across stories like this all the time:. The situation is (hopefully) better at places where ...

Unscientific Thought: Wheels of Time
http://unscientificthought.blogspot.com/2010/07/wheels-of-time.html
Like what you see? Saturday, July 17, 2010. Plants, animals (including humans), and even many bacteria have internal clocks that give the organism some sense of what time of day it is. Chronobiology. Is the branch of science that studies the regulation and biological significance of these cyclic phenomena. Plants have photochemical clocks. That utilize photoreactive pigments such as cryptochrome. And Non-24-Hour Sleep Wake Syndrome. For these reasons, I've often wondered if I have either DSPS or Non-24&#...

Distracts Others: Music

Goodbye Grooveshark, hello Spotify! Some months, I make a playlist to keep track of the new and interesting things I'm listening to. Sometimes I spend enough time on it to make something coherent; other times it's all over the place. Most of it started in Grooveshark, and I'm still copying things over. Google Drive App for Linux (and Mac). I hate desktop-cloud synchronization applications. Googles Drive Sync application is only available for Mac and Windows. I dont care. I have about two terabytes of files in cloud storage. I have several different machines with very different purposes—desktops, laptops, servers, mobile devices—and I only want to store files locally if Im actually going to use them for something. I need a command line tool. Google, through unofficial channels, has delivered. Don't b...

Like what you see? Wednesday, July 21, 2010. This Should Not Be Up For Debate, Part II. From an article in the Health Behavior section of MSNBC:. Researcher Nina Kraus said the data strongly suggested that the neural connections made during musical training also primed the brain for other aspects of human communication. This result is pretty intuitive. The typical criticism leveled at this type of study is that it is very difficult to remove the confounding influence of social and economic wealth. Plants...
