GIS in General: What's in a neighborhood?
http://gisingeneral.blogspot.com/2011/06/whats-in-neighborhood.html
Monday, June 6, 2011. What's in a neighborhood? Where do we live? Depending on where you live, your community may have several areas, or 'neighborhoods' that are named, such as Chelsea or Greenwich Village in New York City, Shaw or Kings Oak in St. Louis, the Plaza in Kansas City or Brentwood in Los Angeles (remember OJ? So what's in a neighborhood? A lot However, one of the biggest disparities between the reality of our lives and the collection of data for government (and other ) purposes is the simple ...

GIS in General: Are companies abusing GPS?
http://gisingeneral.blogspot.com/2011/09/are-companies-abusing-gps.html
Friday, September 23, 2011. Are companies abusing GPS? With the advent of GPS technology in active devices (cell phones, OnStar, etc), it appears that the companies who supply the technology have been collecting data without the user's explicit knowledge or approval [see Wired article here. And my April blog post here. While there is a proposed bill in Congress to limit the use of GPS technology [see GovTech article here. P30] we are becoming an unwired nation. Monday, May 2, 2011. GIS and Social Media. Where you are is often an important part of the message. Whether it's what restaurant, mall, or deserted stretch of highway you're on, where can be extraordinarily useful to acquiring useful data via social media systems. For example, ESRI has posted a Flood Social Media map at http:/ www.esri.com/services/disaster-response/floods/latest-news-map.html. Where will this go? The Science of Knowing Where [sm]. GIS in General: Save Our GPS!
http://gisingeneral.blogspot.com/2011/05/save-our-gps.html
Wednesday, May 11, 2011. While we have no issue with LightSquared making legitimate use of a frequency, if there is any chance their use will adversely affect the GPS systems we rely on, then (in our opinion) their use should be prohibited (unless they can eliminate the interference). More information on this issue is available at http:/ www.saveourgps.org/. The Science of Knowing Where [sm]. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Science of Knowing Where [sm]. GIS in General: The Science of Knowing Where [sm]
http://gisingeneral.blogspot.com/2011/04/science-of-knowing-where-sm.html
Monday, April 25, 2011. The Science of Knowing Where [sm]. Our tagline is "The Science of Knowing Where [sm]", which speaks to our use of science (well, math actually) and technology (GPS and computers) to solve business problems. Far too often businesses make decisions without knowledge - they have lots of data, but no effective way to pull it together, analyze it, or make good decisions. Where should I locate my business? Where are my customers? Where should I advertise? Labels: location data analysis.

Saturday, May 28, 2011. When disaster strike, one of the first questions asked is "where"? Where did the tornado hit, where is the damage, where is a safe place, where is aid being distributed at, where are my friends and family.and many more 'where' questions. In times of crisis, maps and map data are critical - they allow people to evacuate safely, first responders to locate victims, and much more. How does GIS fit in all of this? GIS in General: Location tracking in smartphones (iPhone, Android)
http://gisingeneral.blogspot.com/2011/04/location-tracking-in-smartphones-iphone.html
Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Location tracking in smartphones (iPhone, Android). You may have heard by now that your smartphone is tracking where you are.and storing or possibly sending the data back to Apple or Google (or others). Depending on the phone, apparently this is done using GPS, WiFi and cellular connectivity to determine location (although reportedly it's not terribly accurate without GPS). Why is this important?
