Native Dance - Renewal & Adaptation

http://native-dance.ca/index.php/Renewal?tp=z&bg=5&ln=e&gfx=h&wd=2

As with most cultures around the world, the dances of Native people in Canada are a form of celebration while also serving important spiritual or sacred purposes. Changes to various dance styles happen over time as they adapt to new external and internal influences. We can trace many contemporary dances to earlier social practices, and in some cases, specific dates and persons can be ascertained for certain changes and innovations. X2022; about this site. Eeyou - Eastern Cree. Kawastehksuut (number 9) and Saachiniipinuko (Signs of Summer) were my grandfather and grandmother. In the early 1920s, Kawastehksuut and Saachiniipinuko traveled the land and waters of Eeyou Istchee (people s land) by foot and canoe. They hunted, fished and trapped to keep themselves and my mother s siblings alive. Today, my grandparents legacy and the importance of their traditional skills are still spoken of by my mother and her remaining sister. X2022; about this site.
