Exciting birdwatching experiences, bird photographs, and tips about conservation! Thursday, November 3, 2011. Over the past week, the hawk counters at Hawk Ridge (Duluth, MN) have surpassed 64,000 raptors for this fall! A stunning adult Northern Goshawk (above and left) and juvenile Northern Harrier (above and right) are shown. Both were observed in-the-hand at Hawk Ridge this fall. They were banded at the raptor banding stations located within and near the ridge. Over the past four years of working at H...

Naturally Avian: February 2011

http://naturallyavian.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Exciting birdwatching experiences, bird photographs, and tips about conservation! Thursday, February 24, 2011. Rechargable Batteries and the Awareness of Little Things. The first topic I thought I’d write about is a simple, yet thought-out purchase of batteries. Take a look around your house. are there any batteries being used nearby? It’s a little bit of easily-disposable packaging, that takes up the same size for each of the batteries he is considering; plus, it's barely anything.”. That’s true; ...

Minnesota Birdnerd: So That's Why They're Called Waxwings

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2011/07/so-thats-why-theyre-called-waxwings.html

Wednesday, July 27, 2011. So That's Why They're Called Waxwings. It has been a while since I've had anything interesting to post about. This summer is proving to be hot, humid, stormy and not as "bird centric" as I would like but it has been busy. In a future post I'll talk about the Purple Martin banding that occupied the first 2 weeks of July. Hard work but a record year for us! A close up of the wing reveals the waxy tips to look like they were made from bright red crayons. They feel that way too.

Minnesota Birdnerd: Migration Along the West Coast

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/04/migration-along-west-coast.html

Friday, April 17, 2015. Migration Along the West Coast. Checking radar this morning it looks like a pretty good movement of migrants along the west coast, especially central California and the Pacific Northwest. Should be good birding this weekend. Radar image below is from 8:30 CST of 6:30 Pacific time. What website do you normally use to check migration via radar? May 2, 2015 at 6:18 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Minnesota Birdnerd: Spring is on it's Way.

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/03/spring-is-on-its-way.html

Sunday, March 29, 2015. Spring is on it's Way. Here is a collection of photos from the last couple of weeks. This is a very distant photo of the Long-tailed Duck that showed up above the Coon Rapids Dam in Anoka, Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. It is still there as of today but should be moving on soon. My wife pointed out this Black-crowned Night Heron as we walked through a cypress swamp one morning. Again, a very cooperative bird. What camera do you use to take those images they are fantastic. I'm ju...

Minnesota Birdnerd: Minnesota's First Tropical Kingbird

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/07/minnesotas-first-tropical-kingbird.html

Thursday, July 2, 2015. Minnesota's First Tropical Kingbird. These photos were taken at a relatively close distance and I have enlarged them to show a bit more detail. Fortunately we were able to see the bird in the top of a dead sapling and got great views for about 5 minutes. Several of us watched as the bird flew off the perch and nabbed a meal in the air and then returned. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Apple Valley, Minnesota, United States. Minnesota Birdnerd: A Couple More Kingbird Pictures

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-couple-more-kingbird-pictures.html

Friday, July 3, 2015. A Couple More Kingbird Pictures. Peter Pyle sent a note about molt in the Tropical Kingbirds being seen in Ontario and Minnesota. I do have a couple of photos (not the best quality) of the Minnesota bird preening. I had to enlarge a distant shot for these but it does give a little better look at the wing. Not sure if this helps the discussion. If the bird stays around the opportunity to get better pictures is there. I'm sure there will be updates every day. View my complete profile.

Minnesota Birdnerd: Migration on Radar

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/05/migration-on-radar.html

Saturday, May 9, 2015. I thought I'd try to put together a little video clip of tonight's migration lift-off in the southern U.S. The front that is bringing the storms to the midwest is also slowing migration in the area. Lots of birds in the air in the south! Hopefully these birds will spend a little time in Minnesota too. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Apple Valley, Minnesota, United States. Minnesota Birdnerd: Sax-Zim Bog Trip - Hoary Redpoll

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/02/sax-zim-bog-trip-hoary-redpoll.html

Monday, February 16, 2015. Sax-Zim Bog Trip - Hoary Redpoll. I saw what I believe is a Hoary Redpoll in a small group of redpolls along Admiral Road (just south of the feeders for those who know the area). Here are some photos that I hope will be definitive. The bird was very light. Only had faint streaking on sides and color on chest confined to small area. Compared to other bird in picture bill looks shorter. Yes, I know head angle can distort this but I'm giving it a shot. Thanks for the input. I'm ju...

Hasty Brook: February 2010

http://hastybrook.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Hasty Brook is the loveliest place in my world. It's a little piece of heaven in northern Minnesota. Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival. Last weekend was the Third Annual Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival. In Meadowlands, Minnesota. Ruthie the Nature Knitter. I expected them to fly off but amazingly they landed high up in a maple. We got good long looks of them until they circled the clearing a few more times and then landed at the top of birch snag about ten feet away.

Minnesota Birdnerd: This Could Be It!

http://minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com/2015/05/this-could-be-it.html

Friday, May 15, 2015. This Could Be It! Looking at the radar tonight the images are looking better in the Great Lakes region than they have for a long time. The movement north is huge. This is what it looks like at 10:30 pm:. We band both tomorrow and Sunday if the weather holds out. I would put off the spring cleaning just a little while longer and get into the field. Roger, Park point in Duluth was amazing this weekend! May 18, 2015 at 10:53 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 365 Days of Birds.
