Nature remains.: The empty nest

http://natureremains.blogspot.com/2007/07/empty-nest.html

Tuesday, July 10, 2007. There is a nest, perched on the outcropping of the bare bulb mounted on the rafter in the barn. When I found it weeks ago, it looked very much as it does now—unseen eggs waiting inside - the promise of life. Helpless and bare, they arrived one-by-one, four dependents, the charge of two doting parents. Almost perceptibly, changing and growing. Hinting at who they were to become. Soon, four faces peering over the rim. Eager eyes bright, with eager feathered wings. Still, a tear.

Nature remains.: Shelter

http://natureremains.blogspot.com/2008/06/shelter.html

Thursday, June 5, 2008. For two days the storms have rolled past. With thunder and lightning and the threats of worse. For now, all is still- that eerie stillness that forebodes yet another wave on the western horizon. We watch and wait, ready. There’s a pile of cast off lumber stacked upon the uneven floorboards in the barn. And a small room with a dirt floor, once used for tack, where bricks and concrete blocks fill the edge spaces now, stacked almost to the rafters. Squatting on the wooden step, I wait.

Nature remains.: Sometimes captured in memory is best

http://natureremains.blogspot.com/2007/05/sometimes-captured-in-memory-is-best.html

Wednesday, May 9, 2007. Sometimes captured in memory is best. Last night was a night for owls. When the weather is warm, before the humidity sets in and takes your breath away, we sleep with the bedroom door open- screening out the bugs, letting in the night sounds. It's never perfectly still, even in the very early spring. Before the peepers start their chorus, we have the sounds of the owls. How could she have been so careless. a car .early that morning. I don't have her picture, but I don't need one&#...

Nature remains.: A Sidewalk Going Nowhere

http://natureremains.blogspot.com/2008/01/sidewalk-going-nowhere.html

Thursday, January 31, 2008. A Sidewalk Going Nowhere. There’s a battle brewing—within the walls of my house. As yet, I have not determined the nature of my enemy, except to say that it is “of Nature.”. The two small upstairs bedrooms were barely adequate for our family of four- not to mention the closet problem. There were none. An electric heater, plugged in under the sink, would prevent the pipes from freezing in the winter. The perfect place to sit. An addition behind, with everything else. January 31...

Feather Brained: Light at the End of the Day

http://susansgonetothebirds.blogspot.com/2013/07/light-at-end-of-day.html

Birds, Bites, Bits and Books. Light at the End of the Day. Busy is more than a state of being, it is an oft' used excuse to not do anything. A bit of a conundrum whereby we can't get to it to do it, and so we often don't get it done. Like me. Writing this blog! Where the whole system begins to. Drive me absolutely insane. Time consuming, but important, background work that is crucial, before actually sharing any of the shots I've taken in order to illustrate a thought, rant, or point of view! As I sorted...

Just The Secretary (JTS): Autumn again....

http://jtsnomore.blogspot.com/2009/09/autumn-again.html

Just The Secretary (JTS). Musings, family funnies, pictures and hopefully some journaling to remember our milestones. Sunday, September 27, 2009. Summer is over, although it is still reaching 85 degrees here each day so it's still very warm out. The nights, however, are CRISP and I've actually put a blanket on the bed. I feel cheated from such a short summer (it seemed like) and at the moment I can't recall anything we did during August or September. I'll have to think about it! I saw my old house, spent...

Just The Secretary (JTS). Musings, family funnies, pictures and hopefully some journaling to remember our milestones. Monday, November 24, 2008. 1) I am thankful for a job! Two jobs, actually) In this economy when so many people are losing so much everyday and many don't know if they'll be working tomorrow or not, I am grateful for my ability to keep a job. 3) I am thankful that when my cat kills a bird, he doesn't bring it to me as a "present". Moving to Vancouver Washington: 12/01/2008 - 01/01/2009

http://movingsuz.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Moving to Vancouver Washington. Saturday, December 27, 2008. Let there be light. It took a few days to adjust from the drama of being snowed in to being in a temperate, dry and sunny climate where traffic moved freely and being outdoors was no big deal. After several nice family Christmas celebrations my friend Rita and I drove over to San Francisco's Ocean Beach - which used to be my back yard. I can take almost as many pictures of sun-splashed waves as I can of mounting snow! Links to this post. I coul...

Moving to Vancouver Washington: Marauders

http://movingsuz.blogspot.com/2009/04/marauders.html

Moving to Vancouver Washington. Wednesday, April 29, 2009. It was so convenient to hang seed and suet feeders for the birds off the trellis. But by the second week in April the squirrels woke up from winter and found all those nuts and suet just waiting for them. S'pose they need food too, but they can empty a feeder in a day or two - that might last over a week for birds. So off to the Backyard Bird Shop. Just so you know, that's a Pine Siskin. That top one just cracked me up! View my complete profile.

Moving to Vancouver Washington. Saturday, April 11, 2009. This is what gray, wet days are good for - - baking! Made it sound so easy. Hoy! Maybe for him. This was definitely trial by error. I should explain that I was inspired by a passage in An Omnivore's Dilemm. A about whipping up sourdough starter on the window sill. I used the Boudin Bakery. Website to get started - basically leaving flour and water out to soak up ambient bacteria. Mostly because I just didn't know what to do with it. A Break in the...

Moving to Vancouver Washington: Ode to Winter's Passing

http://movingsuz.blogspot.com/2009/04/ode-to-winters-passing.html

Moving to Vancouver Washington. Friday, April 17, 2009. Ode to Winter's Passing. This isn't entirely finished, but I wanted to get this out while it still has some seasonal relevance. Ode to Winter's Passing. Of pink and gold,. Lost are the spare black veins. Etched high against the steely skies,. Of their own concealed. Tints, at first tentative. On winter's chilly cusp. Deepen into bolder hues. I feel giddy and unsteady. To be so newly. And let loose a. I really like this. View my complete profile.

Moving to Vancouver Washington. Sunday, June 08, 2008. It all started with an energy audit. The local utility, Clark PUD. Offers a free energy audit. Overall, the assessor was fairly conservative. He discouraged solid foam insulation and told me my double pane windows were adequate and replacing them would not be cost effective. First culprit, however, was the refrigerator. The original 1990 era Kenmore was not any level of energy star efficiency. Links to this post. Monday, June 02, 2008. There were doz...

Nature – Writing – Poetry – Photography – Life Coaching. Here are Ways to Relieve It. July 17, 2014. Yesterday I posed a this question on facebook: What’s your #1 stress reliever? These are the wonderful answers I received. Hopefully you can find one or more of these to use when you are stressed out. Alone time in the woods. Sitting on my rock in my horse pasture and doing “soft belly” breathing. Prayer, meditation, reiki, nice bath, exercise (she had a lot of answers). Hanging out with friends. I releas...

Nature remains.

Friday, March 15, 2013. Posted by nina at Nature Remains. Links to this post. Wednesday, September 14, 2011. The thin, green strip has been mowed again—that narrow band of grass and weeds that runs in the few feet of unplowed land on either side of the lane that I walk along each day. Chicory, Cichorium intybus. The danger in letting it grow, I have not quite determined, for nothing woody remains along the field's edge—nothing that, if not cut severely back each month, would soon overtake the road. For b...
