Julian Hough's Anglo-American View of Birds and Birding. Laquo; Previous Post. Northern Goshawks-problems and pitfalls. Status of “Northern” Red-tailed Hawk in Connecticut. An adult Red-tailed I photographed at Lighthouse Point, Ct on the 14th November 2011 was particularly well-marked that I mused about it having some Western influence. I admit I am not familiar enough with that race to know, but it was distinct enough from typical Eastern (. Than adults. Compared to. These features are all noticeable o...

Julian Hough's Anglo-American View of Birds and Birding. Laquo; Gulls Gone Wild! BBC August Overnight Pelagic. Smith’s Longspur, Wilton, CT – Twitch on! Male Smith’s Longspur, Wilton, CT. Friday ended with no real plans for the evening, so I was doing errands at the store, when my phone rang. It was Jake Musser. “Smith’s Longspur reported at Allen’s Meadow! I’m leaving now! So, this was the first chaseable bird since the early 70s or so and a state tick for just about everyone alive! With a careful, not-...

Julian Hough's Anglo-American View of Birds and Birding. Laquo; Northern Goshawks-problems and pitfalls. Yellow-bellied kingbird tail patterns. A self-found Western Kingbird, New Haven, CT October 2010. Nice dark tail and pale grey head identify it quickly as a Western, but note the white tail edges are not visible in this view. (Julian Hough). And recently as last week in Brooklyn, although this was a one-observer sighting and couldn’t be refound. Tropical (left two birds) and Western (right two birds)&...

Julian Hough's Anglo-American View of Birds and Birding. Laquo; Status of “Northern” Red-tailed Hawk in Connecticut. Yellow-bellied kingbird tail patterns. Northern Goshawks-problems and pitfalls. Our well-known, in-state watchpoints (Lighthouse Pt. and Quaker Ridge) are manned everyday, all day, at this time of year and there are few reports of Northern Goshawk. The math is simple. Goshawks are uncommon. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click to email (Opens in new window). From your own site.

Shorebirder: Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28)
http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/misc-birding-flight-home-june-27-28.html
Monday, July 6, 2015. Misc birding, flight home (June 27-28). My last two days in Washington revolved around Ryan and Evie's wedding festivities. On the morning of the 27th I leisurely made my way from Wenatchee to Poulsbo for the wedding that afternoon. My only stop to bird came in Tacoma to quickly check for that Slaty-backed Gull. Again, nothing. We all had a blast at the wedding last night. Not much sleep was had, which is a sign of a great time. Your typical moist lowland forest around Puget Sound.

Monday, August 31, 2015. Aug 22-23 - BBC Pelagic Insanity. I guess we should be used to this by now. The BBC August overnight pelagic trip never really fails to produce. With a couple of epic trips in recent years, expectations were high for last weekend's excursion. Somehow we managed to exceed those expectations on many levels. I will leave the full-blown summary to trip leader Jeremiah Trimble, but here are some numbers for you in the meantime:. 2 Black-capped Petrel (white-faced type). Peter and Jere...
Shorebirder: Olympic Peninsula & Vancouver Island (June 23-24)
http://www.shorebirder.com/2015/07/olympic-peninsula-vancouver-island-june.html
Saturday, July 4, 2015. Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island (June 23-24). My plan for today was to bird around Ocean Shores (on the opposite side of Grays Harbor from Westport) for the morning, then leisurely make my way along the outer coast to Port Angeles for a 9pm ferry to Victoria Island, BC. Mule Deer 'likes' include long walks on the beach. About as good as I could do for a record shot of this morning's Ancient Murrelet. Heading north from Ocean Shores I gave myself a short tour around Quinault...

Saturday, November 22, 2014. Is it too late for Cave Swallows? I have no idea how Cave Swallows did this past summer in the Texas/Oklahoma region. But I do know that we have had not had any. Decent Cave Swallow setup weather this month. Not surprisingly there have been zero eBird records of Cave Swallow from New England this autumn season. Current US weather on the morning of Nov 22 - a weak SW flow in the target area. Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Notes from Last Weekend (Nov 14-16). Among about a dozen H...

Naturescape Images | Julian Hough's Anglo-American View of Birds & Birding
Julian Hough's Anglo-American View of Birds and Birding. January 6, 2018. This won’t be a great piece of literary birding prose, but just a few notes and pix of a recent trip to Mexico for a Thanksgiving break. Ingrid and I wanted to escape the northeastern cold and so we headed for the Yucatan, Mexico for some much-needed rest and relaxation. Ohand birding…definitely some of that! 18th -21st November Cozumel. Our cool digs at the Hotel Iberostar, Cozumel. An easy, slam dunk tick…Black Catbird. The follo...

Wednesday, June 18, 2008. Waterwise, or, increase the oxygen level? First, let us weigh the cost. Artificial grass is going to cost you as much if not more as brick pavers, as it is installed in a similar fashion with the sub base. Real grass will cost you a fraction of that. You don't need to water artificial grass, or at least I hope not. A standing joke at my suppliers yards is that they need to water the fake grass. And to make sure it is installed green side up. If you have any questions, please call...
