December Blogs

http://naturesgarden.co.uk/december.htm

December always naturally makes me think of Christmas, and Christmas makes me think of robins and this colourful little bird seems to feature on almost every Christmas card I have received so far this month and no wonder - it is a bird we very much notice, and associate with, this time of year. There is no skulking in the undergrowth for the Robin. It is very rewarding to know that all this wildlife appreciates the garden habitat here.

March Blogs

http://naturesgarden.co.uk/march.htm

I opened my back door out to the garden this morning to hear the most wonderful sound the song of a Mistle Thrush. The flowers of the Dandelion. Look garish when compared to the subtle yellow of the primrose this month, but the dandelion is one of the most important plants in our gardens, and in the past was an important plant in the country calendar. The leaves of dandelion are edible (but disgustingly bitter! But the highlight for me was the sight of a pair of Choughs.

May Blogs

http://naturesgarden.co.uk/may.htm

I was recently asked to do an online question and answer interview, giving thoughts and suggestions about wildlife gardening. It was an interesting challenge to synthesize my thoughts and keep my answers brief I am used to teaching courses or giving talks where I often have plenty of time to ramble on or go off at a tangent! There followed about an hour of my trying to encourage her into the container but I had to admit defeat and leave her to make her own decisions. I left the nest overnight, and th...

April Blogs

http://naturesgarden.co.uk/april.htm

As we move through April towards May, woodlands and waysides start to burst with late spring flowers. One of the most notable of these is the Bluebell. Bluebells are flowering earlier and in mild springs in the south a few can even be seen in February, something that is considered to be an indication of climate change. As spring races on I really look forward to hearing a few species of warbler singing as they return to my garden and the surrounding hedges. Chiffchaff. The RSPB has excellent clips of man...

August Blogs

http://naturesgarden.co.uk/august.htm

This handsome male was feeding on the ground close to the small pond and was only seen once. However the next day a single juvenile was seen again. Since then there has been no sign of this species; they are no doubt now making their way southwards to north-west Africa to warmer, sunnier weather. The results of this activity can be seen here. Not a huge number of species so far but that is largely as a result of my inexperience as a 'mother' - that is, someone who is interested in moths (as with 'birder'...
