Volumes of Salt: July 2012

It's a sea of words out there; here are some I've enjoyed. Maphead: Charting the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks. Not for navigational purposes. Assistive technologies are increasingly rare. Avoid sailing off the edge. Series come to mind. Still others attempt to "bag", colonial-explorer-style, over 100 countries visited, itself a race against time as Jennings records that most members of the "Traveler's Century Club" are both moderately to very wealthy and moderately to very old. Jennings, while a ...

Volumes of Salt: April 2011
http://volumesofsalt.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
It's a sea of words out there; here are some I've enjoyed. Beyond the Coral Sea: Blink and you'll miss the past. Think "tropical island paradise" and most Westerners think of Polynesia. Movies, TV and tales of HMS Bounty have inculcated a sense of flowers, bare-breasted young women free with their favours, and a life of leisure in which one might be roused to husk a coconut or spear a fish. Less prevalent is the idea of cannibalism, obscure magical rites and "the blackest people on Earth". Who didn't nec...

Volumes of Salt: If sailing's a religion, here's the Book of Common Care
http://volumesofsalt.blogspot.com/2011/12/if-sailings-religion-heres-book-of.html
It's a sea of words out there; here are some I've enjoyed. If sailing's a religion, here's the Book of Common Care. Nigel Calder’s Cruising Handbook,. By Nigel Calder,. International Marine/McGraw Hill,. 7855, 588 pp. That’s where heavy-duty compendiums like Nigel Calder’s Cruising Handbook. Calder’s style is clear, concise and knowledgeable, which makes this heavily illustrated latest work a pleasure to read. Even nearing the decade mark since publication, a quick review confirms that it remai...It̵...

Volumes of Salt: Tale of the Scale a touch on the gusty side
http://volumesofsalt.blogspot.com/2011/12/tale-of-scale-touch-on-gusty-side.html
It's a sea of words out there; here are some I've enjoyed. Tale of the Scale a touch on the gusty side. Defining the Wind: the Beaufort Scale, and How a 19th-Century Admiral Turned ScienceInto Poetry. By Scott Huler, Crown Publishers. ISBN: 1400048842, 2004. Oh, and the Beaufort Sea in the Arctic? That’s named for him, as well. Huler was a copy editor when he stumbled across Beaufort’s famous scale of wind effects in the early 1980s. There it was, in a dictionary of all places, and he found the...What he...

Volumes of Salt: December 2013
http://volumesofsalt.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
It's a sea of words out there; here are some I've enjoyed. Reading this was a bit of a Fluke. Now I know, too. Between work, boat work and work, I don't read fiction the way I used to. Boating magazines, technical papers on "floating grounds" and other mysteries of boat electrics, sure. Even three-week old copies of The Economist. But fiction? So naturally, I go for a nautically themed novel, even if it was a gift I gave to my wife 10 years ago. Fluke. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.
