Saturday, February 26, 2011. A Trip to Newport. The Breakers, no doubt one of the most famous homes in Newport. It has long been one of my favorite homes. It was built for the Vanderbilt family as a summer home between 1893 and 1895. I would be happy living full time in this charming cottage, with ocean views, turn-of-the-century details, and tons of charm. Can you believe this was actually a playhouse for the Vanderbilt children? The grand rear facade, overlooking the Atlantic ocean. Newport Rhode Islan...

Tuesday, September 21, 2010. A Walk Around Fairhope. The beautiful Fairhope Pier. If you have not yet visited Fairhope, I highly suggest you make a trip. In the spring, the city hosts the Arts and Crafts Festival, where artisans from across the country showcase their work. Last year, it attracted over 250,000 visitors. If you take the trip, I suggest staying at the Grand Hotel Marriot, a local landmark that has been around since 1847. The Fairhope clock, another local landmark. This charming home, which ...

Thursday, January 27, 2011. I was away on adventures with Builder Gary today and didn’t get down to the house until after lunch – excuse me, I should say. 160; When I got there, I looked out the living room window and saw that the framers were roofing the little porchlet. The area outside the French door will be a grilling deck for my gas grill and Big Green Egg. So convenient – just outside the kitchen! The little porchlet will house a hanging bed. Happily, we lost no trees in this latest storm, but it was scary. A block away a tree top snapped off and landed on a small car with two women in it, killing them. Meanwhile, back inside I had more trim decisi...

Saturday, January 28, 2012. Let’s Get the Party Started! We didn’t waste any time getting the house broken in. We started with a bluegrass hootenanny at the beginning of December. It was a great test for the great room and kitchen. With a fire roaring in the fireplace, there was room enough for food, spectators, and musicians. Then we turned it around and tidied up for garden club. That seemed to do the trick. And look what a beautiful arrangement he made. And he just kept going! Where should we do that?
