Archive for July, 2008. The students left ten days ago. Out the window of the dining car on the Iç Anadolu Mavi Tren, I can see the same Taurus mountains in which we spent time together. I’m returning to Istanbul from Syria. Since the students left, I’ve been thinking again and again about the summer course, about the students, about the whole project of active learning. I was often confused during the seven week seminar. What is active teaching? Isn’t all teaching active? Sometimes I thought I actually ...

Buenos aires en llamas. Cuentos de buenos aires. Jueves, 6 de marzo de 2008. Llueve en Buenos Aires. It's been raining in Buenos Aires for more than a week now which apparently the city can't handle - there's flooding and power outages all over the city (and there were even 2 tornadoes on Sunday! And of course it's worse in La Matanza where many streets of the dirt streets are impassable some schools, which were supposed to open on Monday, still haven't opened. From the last couple of months.

Buenos aires en llamas. Cuentos de buenos aires. Jueves, 13 de diciembre de 2007. La Matanza: sidra y pan dulce! December is always one of my favorite months in Buenos Aires and the last couple of days in La Matanza reminded me why - hours of fairly repetitive (yet fun) work of painting boxes or pasting stickers on boxes or equally exciting tasks are always interrupted by parties and sidra! Walking the King’s Road. July 3, 2008 at 6:32 am. Pamukkale to Eǧirdir was on a public bus, larger and more comfortable that what we had taken so far. It was much more conducive to sleep. I think these students need bus rides to sleep they seem to be awake all the rest of the time. We were delighted to have the park to ourselves, but spent some time on the rocks talking as we dried off. What does it mean that no one was at the national park? To whom does the Tourism Ministry direct itself? Yekta Goes to ...

Between Chapel Hill and Timbuktu. We drove along fairly empty streets to the hotel, where a man carried our suitcases down the street and into a wonderful hotel room, showed us how to use the mosquito netting and left us to sleep. When William awoke this morning with a fever and a terrible cough, we decided we wouldn’t stray too far today. In our dining room in NC, one probably 8 feet tall, the other a climber whose size seems to astonish newcomers. Here they are gigantic! December 30, 2007 at 8:41 am.
