My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: Impressions
http://necaibewmthompson.blogspot.com/2009/11/impressions.html
Sunday, November 22, 2009. This week I started on a new project. It is a project in D.C. It is also a fast track project. Fast track meaning, the expectation is that work will be done quickly to make an early deadline soon after the new-year. Impressions…you never get a second chance to make a first impression…the old saying is a true saying. How do others look at us? Is it hands down supportive or positive? Is it totally negative? Whatever the case may be, it is based on an experience. You never kno...
My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: May 2009
http://necaibewmthompson.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Chronograduphobia ; a term that a few of us came up with that puts a name to the feeling of anxiety at becoming an A Journeyman or “coming out of your time” as we call it as Electricians who’ve come up thru the apprenticeship. When you step into day school on the first day of your 1st year, 5 years seems like well… half a decade away…and then it’s 11 days away and counting! Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Thompson. I am a 5th year apprentic...The o...

Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Let’s Fast Forward into the First Week of August…. When I last wrote, I was two weeks into being a Journeyman Electrical professional. The responsibilities are on another level but I totally feel my training has made me rise to the occasion. Let’s Fast Forward into the First Week of August…. Monday 8/3/2009: This was the first day of classes. I am taking a leadership class and a film editing class. Our strength is in our training and you can see why…the instruction ...Tuesday 8/4...
My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: Two weeks in...
http://necaibewmthompson.blogspot.com/2009/06/two-weeks-in.html
Friday, June 19, 2009. Today marks two working weeks that I have been an A Journeyman Electrician. This is the top of the game. Without a doubt I am expected to have a total grasp of the concept of electrical work. At first I was a little nervous about it. The first week was a continuation of what we call a three-alarm blaze. A three-alarm blaze is when there is a deadline to be met and another crew is called in to assist the original working crew. July 1, 2009 at 6:41 PM. View my complete profile.
My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: Into the fall...
http://necaibewmthompson.blogspot.com/2009/09/into-fall.html
Tuesday, September 1, 2009. It has been an interesting. Summer as a first year Journeyman. The challenges have been real, and the responsibilities. Real but rewarding. I find myself referring. Back into what I have learned in dealing with some scenarios. I see on the job. Just having a solid foundation of electrical concepts to stand on, a uniform way to operate.and the "network" is helpful. Believe me, I've had to use code knowledge. In the middle of all this "newness" I got the chance to teach a few cl...

My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: August 2010
http://necaibewrpuvapiromquan.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 26, 2010. Back to School, again! August is almost over, and with that comes one of my favorite seasons, Autumn. There's something about Maryland summers that really tests your patience. It's a struggle to stay hydrated, there's seemingly no relief from the stagnant air drenched with humidity, and through it all you're supposed to do your best at your daily tasks involving physical labor. Not to mention the mosquitos! Links to this post. Tuesday, August 3, 2010. When I first found out tha...

My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: It's That Time of Year...
http://necaibewrpuvapiromquan.blogspot.com/2010/10/its-that-time-of-year.html
Tuesday, October 12, 2010. It's That Time of Year. Or you might land yourself in a mud pit. In the middle of December. Mud in December? Five minutes goes by in a blink of an eye. Surprisingly, I found that I still needed to prepare an outline before designing the final presentation. Quite a bit of time goes into these slideshows, and if you're a perfectionist about visual elements, then it's entirely too easy to fall down the bunny hole. Thursday we present. Fun fun! My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: August 2011
http://necaibewrpuvapiromquan.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 30, 2011. The Wild Ride Continues. Another school year approaches and it seems like yesterday that I just graduated from the apprenticeship, although it's been three months now. I must admit it has been a jam-packed quarter of a year! Many have been doing it for years and years and what drives them is the sole desire to help others along. I became lost in a sea of Journeymen and Masters of my field and it felt incredible. Links to this post. Good of the Union. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship: March 2010
http://necaibewrpuvapiromquan.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 20, 2010. Another Year, already? During this past week's evening class, I spoke with a few other 4th year apprentices, and was reminded that we'll be getting our 5th year bump in pay very soon. In fact, it's much sooner than I expected! Then there's the flip-side - personnel management: overseeing a helper, running a crew, being a truck-driver, estimating, purchasing material, material handling, being a foreman, being a general foreman, superintendent, project manager, etc. There are ...

My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship
Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Further Adventures in Baltimore. For the last month I've worked on the refrigeration control system for a brand new grocery store in Howard County. While Howard County isn't in Local 26's jurisdiction it is where I live. After working in Arlington, at Fort Belvior and Ashburn, Virginia it was incredibly nice to have an assignment that didn't have me driving on 95 and the Beltway every day! Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Doing upgrades in an existing building was new for me. Al...
My NECA/IBEW Apprenticeship
Monday, April 26, 2010. OK, everyone can stop worrying, I'm back to working with tools! Anyway, about this new job. It just so happens that we just learned a little about data centers in school. A data center is basically a secure site for digital information storage and it's associated equipment. It's a rush job, so there's plenty of overtime to be had, which is always a good thing. My overtime pay is less than an A journeyman's straight time pay! Tuesday, March 30, 2010. I'D LOVE TO WATCH A FIRE. It's ...
