Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Setting foot on new grounds! My last experiment was inconclusive, but in an attempt to make a half-step forward with at least something, I painted a face haphazardly with Chinese black ink on rice paper. I hadn't touched black ink for 7 years! I then pasted the torn rice paper on cotton/linen and added glazes of transparent and semi-transparent colors with acrylics. The result agreed with me! The previous version was fine, however, something in me wants to pursue a more visceral approach. The balancing act between the two approaches is exciting to me! After a number of experiments with Chinese paper, I decided to revert back to my usual "canvas over canvas" collage technique dragging the colors that I saw in Cuba. I ended up with a breakthrough painting that points to possibilities in the area of semi-abstracted figuration.
