Confessions of a Conservation Officer: January 2009

Confessions of a Conservation Officer. Saturday, 31 January 2009. The Joy of Listing. Another city that suffered badly in the War was Plymouth, where the same pattern of hasty clearance. A very loaded consultation has made it quite clear that the council see any further listings as a "constraint" (the City were livid at the listing of their own offices - which are admittedly difficult to like at first glance but are, on close inspection, excellent of their type and date http:/ www.plymouth.gov...And d...

Confessions of a Conservation Officer: A Slice of Unmitigated Nostalgia
http://conservationofficer.blogspot.com/2009/04/slice-of-unmitigated-nostalgia.html
Confessions of a Conservation Officer. Tuesday, 28 April 2009. A Slice of Unmitigated Nostalgia. Nothing much to do with architecture, but too good not to add. I'm a complete sucker for this sort of socialist realist (ie utterly fictional) film-making (. So here's "English Harvest" of 1938 in glorious Dufaycolour, courtesy of the British Film Institute and currently doing the rounds as part of a tour entitled "Britain at Bay". Confessions of a Conservation Officer: The Decline of Civilisation
http://conservationofficer.blogspot.com/2009/04/decline-of-civilisation.html
Confessions of a Conservation Officer. Tuesday, 21 April 2009. The Decline of Civilisation. An architectural photographer's disappointing experience of the boys in blue combines the elegant work of one of the best firms of architects working in the period 1945-70 with further evidence of the paranoid new barbarism into which we are sleepwalking. All who spend any time enjoying, and recording, the built environment would do well to read Edward Denison's piece here:. Labels: mcmorran and whitby. A Slice of...

Confessions of a Conservation Officer: It seems it's just as bad in Wales, after all.

Confessions of a Conservation Officer. Saturday, 23 May 2009. It seems it's just as bad in Wales, after all. OK, that’s EH wrecked, now time to look at the previously pretty blameless CADW:. Even then, having mostly iron machinery which survived the fire, it could have been saved, and a couple of years ago, CADW dug deep in their pockets and agreed to finance the preservation of what was left:. Http:/ www.cadw.wales.gov.uk/default.asp? Will CADW be asking for their money back? Combined wind and watermill.

Jones the planner: Stockport, Cheshire

An ancient market town. The old view – Hillgate. The view everybody knows – Wellington Road. The 1840s and the 1970s. The spectacular and the banal. Stockport Station – the dispiriting welcome. The Mersey: could be a more spectacular farewell. A heritage and community success story. Is not really doing it. The Merseyway Centre opens up. Bridging Stockport – continuing the tradition. A street in the sky (and a nice old department store below). Form, grid and tessellation. Plugged in to the old fabric.

Fitzwalter: February 2010
http://fitzwalter.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Monday, 1 February 2010. Reconstructing a George III cruet. When my grandmother was moving in the 1970s she gave away some of her furniture and effects to members of the family, her new purpose built flat being much smaller than her cold, damp maisonette. Other items which she felt were of no interest or value were thrown away. One more caster and two silver topped bottles and I would be there. My heart leapt a couple of weeks a go when I found just the right pair of bottles coming up at auction. Http:/ ...

Thursday, 14 January 2010. Restoring an old Chaise Longue. This is the image in the auctioneer's catalogue of an early to mid 19th century chaise longue which I bid for successfully. The only flaw I noticed other than the tired uphostery was a broken and poorly repaired back leg. It has now been stripped and found to be in a poorer state than I expected. More to follow when images from the restorer arrive. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Made by Hand- the great Sartorial Debate. NOTES ON MY COSTUME.

Architecture, housing, planning and more. A warm February evening across from the Apple Store. Beyond the tangle of wires the shiny metal box that is the Apple Store, a reminder that many of the recent developments in city life have nothing to do with the construction of buildings or transport infrastructure but in the way we interact with them. February 16, 2015. This entry was posted in San Francisco. Ed Lee’s plans for “middle class” home buying & the math. What’s wrong with shipping container housing?
