Neopythonic: Book review: Introduction to Computer Science Using Python (by Charles Dierbach)
http://neopythonic.blogspot.com/2013/10/book-review-charles-dierbach.html
Monday, October 28, 2013. Book review: Introduction to Computer Science Using Python (by Charles Dierbach). After much back and forth I received a nice new Python book in the mail. The book's full title is " Introduction to Computer Science Using Python: A Computational Problem-Solving Focus. And its author is a very experienced educator, Charles Dierbach. At the same time, the book gives plenty of useful practical information, such as instructions for using IDLE and an extensive explanation of turtle gr...
Neopythonic: The History of Python - Introduction
http://neopythonic.blogspot.com/2009/01/history-of-python-introduction.html
Tuesday, January 13, 2009. The History of Python - Introduction. Python is 19 years old now. I started the design and implementation of the language on a cold Christmas break in Amsterdam, in late December 1989. It started out as a typical hobby project. Little did I know where it would all lead. With Python's coming of age, I am going to look back on the history of the language, from the conception as a personal tool, through the the early years of community building, ( If Guido was hit by a bus? Januar...
Neopythonic: Tail Recursion Elimination
http://neopythonic.blogspot.com/2009/04/tail-recursion-elimination.html
Wednesday, April 22, 2009. I recently posted an entry in my Python History blog on the origins of Python's functional features. A side remark about not supporting tail recursion elimination (TRE) immediately sparked several comments about what a pity it is that Python doesn't do this, including links to recent blog entries. By others trying to "prove" that TRE can be added to Python easily. So let me defend my position (which is that I don't want. I don't believe in recursion as the basis of all programm...
Neopythonic: Scala?
http://neopythonic.blogspot.com/2008/11/scala.html
Friday, November 21, 2008. I received a free copy of the Scala eBook. By Martin Odersky, Lex Spoon, and Bill Venners. I tried to read it on my CalTrain. Commute, but ended up only skimming - at 700 pages it's a hefty tome. I'm also not in the primary target audience, as its focus seems to bounce between trying to entice Java programmers to try a better language, and an introduction to programming that happens to use Scala. I ended up going to the Scala website. A more technical overview paper. Haskell is...
Neopythonic: Python in the Scientific World
http://neopythonic.blogspot.com/2009/11/python-in-scientific-world.html
Thursday, November 5, 2009. Python in the Scientific World. I was blown away by the wide variety of Python use for scientific work. It looks like Python (with extensions like numpy) is becoming a standard tool for many sciences that need to process large amounts of data, from neuroimaging to astronomy. Fernando gave an overview of the core Python software used throughout scientific computing: NumPy, Matplotlib, IPython (by Fernando), Mayavi, Sympy (about which more later), Cython, and lots more. SymPy - ...

Nine More Minutes » FAQ
http://www.ninemoreminutes.com/faq
Where did the name “Nine More Minutes” originate? The phrase “nine more minutes” was part of a song I wrote in 2002 entitled “Oversleep”. It is the normal amount of time an alarm clock waits after you hit snooze until it goes off again. It reflects my preference to work late night hours, as late as needed to get the job finished, and my ability to sleep through any alarm clock, hitting snooze for hours on end. I’d like to schedule a meeting at 8:00am. Would that be possible? Blue Sky On Mars.

Saturday, July 23, 2016. About spammers and comments. I'm turning off commenting for my blogs. While I've enjoyed some feedback, the time wasted to moderate spam posts just isn't worth it. Thank you, spammers! Wednesday, May 18, 2016. I've heard some grumbling about the union syntax in PEP 484. Union[X, Y, Z] (where X, Y and Z are arbitrary type expressions). In the past people have suggested X Y Z for this, or (X, Y, Z) or {X, Y, Z}. Why did we go with the admittedly clunkier Union[X, Y, Z]? That's the ...
