1 Human vocalization: Its neural, genetic, and evolutionary bases. We are using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to analyze the brain areas and neural pathways that control vocalization. We have characterized a part of the human motor cortex that controls laryngeal function, and have shown this to be the major vocal centre of the human brain, for both speaking and singing. 2 Comparative musicology: Classification, universals, and cultural evolution of music.

Thursday, November 17, 2011. Today, I'll be talking about People Will Talk. With Larry Mantle, KPCC 89.3. It's an NPR station broadcasting to Pasadena, LA, Orange County and the Web. http://gentraso.blogspot.com/2011/11/itetem-ta-humgopakaltogether-now.html

Wednesday, November 09, 2011. Itetem ta humgopak.Altogether now! If you read the paper. On musical diversity within and between cultures in todays Proc R Soc, you will search in vain for any idea of what the music actually sounds like. So I had a google. And then I had a totally unrigorous ponder on what I found (I also looked in vain for any proper coverage of this work). Tom Rzeszutek and his colleagues. Here's a snippet of a rather nice Paiwan love song. Sounds pretty similar to me. And what does the ...

Dance is one of the most exciting new areas of scientific research, perhaps the next wave in cognitive neuroscience. The study of dance – like the related study of music – places us firmly at the interface of art and science. Dance research is one of the most multidisciplinary fields around, integrating movement, music, and social interaction. Dance research at McMaster is taking advantage of a state-of-the-art facility called the LIVELab. In connection with the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind.
