NeuroDojo: Carnival of the Blue #45
http://neurodojo.blogspot.com/2011/02/carnival-of-blue-45.html
Carnival of the Blue #45. The epipelagic: The sunlight zone. The surface of the ocean is the place that most of us are familiar with, since this is where the water meets the land. Humans have been driving stakes into the mud flats and beaches. The interactions of humans with the denizens of these shallow waters are not always. friendly. And well lit does not always mean “visible.” Heed well the tale of Ivan, he who stepped on a stonefish. And live to tell thee the tale. The mesopelagic: The twilight zone.
NeuroDojo: Who paid for my open access articles?
http://neurodojo.blogspot.com/2015/01/who-paid-for-my-open-access-articles.html
Who paid for my open access articles? A recurring concern from some researchers about open access is the cost to authors. This is an area of persistent misconceptions. And a lot of fear. It’s a legitimate question of whether article processing charges create a Matthew effect, with labs with grants gaining an unfair advantage over those without grants. http://neurodojo.blogspot.com/2013/02/sasquatch-dna-new-journal-or-vanity.html

Of a brand new journal that has no other articles in it. You may recall that a couple of weeks ago, I co-moderated a session at Science Online. Now, I am a scientist who is on the record as people should sometimes submit papers to new journals. There is no editor listed. There is no editorial board listed. There is no phone number.
NeuroDojo: The Zen of Presentations, Part 41: Consistency
http://neurodojo.blogspot.com/2011/05/zen-of-presentations-part-41.html
The Zen of Presentations, Part 41: Consistency. I spend a fair amount of time reviewing students’ PowerPoint presentations. The thing I probably spend the most time fixing is not. Their science, but their friggin’ lists of bullet points. I often see bulleted lists like this:. Readers distracted by content of a page when looking at its layout. Lorem Ipsum Looks Like Readable English. Now default for desktop publisher and web page editors. Maintaining consistency becomes downright treacherous when you are ...
