S is for stitch: October 2012
http://sisforstitch.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
S is for stitch. Sunday, October 7, 2012. Baking with Uncle Bob. I subscribe to the Baker's Banter. Blog from King Arthur Flour. It is a never-ending source of baking deliciousness and many of our favorite recipes are from the blog or the KA baking books I own. The King Arthur store in Norwich, Vermont is always our last stop on the way home whenever we are in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. The store. The newest blog entry was a recipe for Fresh Appe Cinnamon Scones. I have never heard or...

Monday Beans: April 2013
http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 8, 2013. On one of our first forays off the boat in the Bahamas I ordered Peas and Rice at Angela Starfish on Harbour Island. They were so good I had to ask how to make them. Angela was a little vague, not because she didn't want to share a secret recipe but I think because she couldn't believe there was anyone on earth who didn't already know how to make them. Finally I wheedled out of her a few key ingredients: onions, peppers, thyme. It's a start. Add a cup of rice and stir and cook for ...

S is for stitch: Binding and a Bag
http://sisforstitch.blogspot.com/2012/09/binding-and-bag.html
S is for stitch. Tuesday, September 18, 2012. Binding and a Bag. Sometimes I look at all the projects I have going and don't want to work on any of them. So I do some prep work that will save me time when I tackle UFOs or when I start a new project. I call these days "non-quilting days" even though whatever work I do often is for quilting projects. Here's some binding that I made recently using bias strips. I used a circle-polka dot fabric for the backing. I love the cheerful colors. Posted by OT Quilter.

S is for stitch: May 2012
http://sisforstitch.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
S is for stitch. Tuesday, May 29, 2012. May's Free Motion Challenge. S Free Motion Challenge continues, this month with a pair of video lessons from Leah Day. I have followed Leah's blog and her personal challenge of creating 365 filler designs for free motion quilting. She is very talented and I was really looking forward to her lesson. She did not disappoint. She showed two "foundational" designs, designs which start with a foundation line that becomes the basis of your quilting. And I am finishing a l...

S is for stitch: November: Part 1
http://sisforstitch.blogspot.com/2012/11/november.html
S is for stitch. Friday, November 30, 2012. We began the month of November in a darkened, cold house, thanks to Big Storm Sandy. But the month got better, day by day. Our power and heat returned after only 5 days and we felt so lucky that the only trees down on our property were nowhere near our house. And, as usual, I end up combining and tweaking recipes I've used before: Nick Magieri's. Pastry, Richard Sax'. S pumpkin pie (the filling) and Susan Purdy's. No sewing, you say? Posted by OT Quilter. I am ...

Monday Beans: Tuscany on 21st Street
http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010/06/tuscany-on-21st-street.html
Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Tuscany on 21st Street. Jack and I don't go to supermarkets much. We have a shopping route that mostly takes us up and down the streets of the Strip District. To produce markets and specialty stores. Particularly our favorites, Penn Mac. S, and Reyna's. We do our shopping and reward ourselves with espresso and cappuccino at La Prima Espresso. 1 cup cannellini beans, rinsed and soaked overnight. Drain the beans and cook in the broth until just tender. Drain. 3-4 scallions, sliced.

Monday Beans: Senior Year Beans
http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010/08/senior-year-beans.html
Friday, August 13, 2010. My sister and I grew up in a little town on the outer suburbs of Philadelphia. Ridley Park. Is just over one square mile in area and when we lived there the population was under 10,000. We had our own high school. I idolized her and wanted to be just like her. One day at the beginning of my junior year they announced over the PA that anyone interested in applying to be a exchange student should see their guidance counselor. O happy day! For the next few months I was focused on ge...

Monday Beans: March 2010
http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 23, 2010. New cousins, new beans. I'm a family history addict. I'm lucky to have been born into a family of story tellers and writers, so reading and listening to family lore my whole life made me want to know more about the various branches of my ancestry. Why did their names change? So I sought out histories of the Huguenots, Quebec, the Banat, Haiti, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas to learn about their lives. Suddenly- and it does seem sudden- we find ourselves in the future. Millions of...

Monday Beans: Early CSA Overload
http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010/06/our-csa-farm-started-with-bang-this.html
Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Our CSA farm started with a bang this season. As always, the first few weeks are mostly lettuce and greens, herbs, spring onions and garlic scapes. We live on main course salads during June, trying to keep up with the produce we get every week. When Monday rolled around this week I happened to come across a wonderful article by Anna Thomas. In the latest issue of Yoga Journal about her book Love Soup. Butter Bean and Summer Vegetable Soup. 1 cup dried giant lima beans. Cook the be...

Monday Beans: February 2010
http://mondaybeans.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 23, 2010. In the Skytrain the first day I saw an ad for Yellow Pages that made me chuckle. The headline read "Touched the pole? And the text said you could find anything in the Yellow Pages, including hand sanitizer. Well, I touched the pole. By the time we left Vancouver I had the sniffles, and when we got home a week later I was ready for my usual sinus-clearing comfort food, something spicy and mushy. This time I decided on an Ethiopian dish called Mesir Wat. 2 cloves of garlic.
