Eskimo Bill Says...: June 2006
http://eskimobill.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html
Journeys of an IT heretic. Sunday, June 18, 2006. My first experiences with computers didn't come in a corporate or institutional setting they came at home playing with the (very) early personal computers my friends and I had access to. The power of computers and networks continues to increase exponentially, thanks to Moore's law. Is this holding us back? I can only wonder. What I do know is that the future always belongs to the next generation, and things are going to be interesting. What do you think?

Journeys of an IT heretic. Sunday, July 30, 2006. Diversity on your team. This past week I attended the Agile 2006 conference. In Minneapolis. I really enjoyed it and found it to be a great forum to see and discuss agile project practices. I found that the sessions I enjoyed the most where the ones covering or discussing the human side of agile projects. Of those sessions the one that surprised me the most was 'Enhancing Diversity' hosted by Orit Hazzan. We then identified all factors of diversity that c...

Journeys of an IT heretic. Monday, October 23, 2006. Podcasts - IT radio to go. I've had a lot of electronic 'devices' over years. Some of them I used for quite a while and got decent benefits from while others. I felt never really paid back the investment. The device that changed all this for me was the iPod. I picked up a 30GB iPod photo in April 2005 and since then it's become an essential part of my day. As Doc Searls put it). The 'granddaddy' of IT podcasts, produces more shows by far from many spea...

Journeys of an IT heretic. Monday, November 13, 2006. Nobody ever got fired for buying.Microsoft? Like Yogi Berra said. Sometimes it's like deja vu all over again . I guess I’ve been at this long enough to remember back to the 1980's when, in corporate IT, we tended to look for the IBM solution first, regardless of what other options there might be, and often overlooked the fact that the IBM option really sucked. As long as it had the illusion of being consistent with our other IBM software. It's just th...

Journeys of an IT heretic. Tuesday, April 08, 2008. We all know the saying that states perception is 9/10 of reality? End users perceive the level of quality in software based on how they like the user interface and the experience it provides. Into the user interface. What is the ‘Wow! It’s when your target end users start to use the UI and immediately get excited about how it well streamline their work, or make their jobs easier or more enjoyable. How do we get to ‘Wow! Establish UI design guidelines.

Journeys of an IT heretic. Saturday, February 25, 2006. Well I finally got around to starting a blog. I've been working in IT since 1988 and I've got a lot to say about a lot of things, so I thought I'd try adding my 2 cents to the 'blogosphere'. As an engineer who likes to build stuff. It's been an interesting journey through the corporate IT world (where engineering and building stuff is often not. The important thing - go figure). My better half already has a blog ( www.newcenturyhomestead.com.

Journeys of an IT heretic. Sunday, March 26, 2006. Give your development project a heartbeat. Back in the early to mid-90's I did a fair bit of reading about Microsoft as they asserted their hold on the IT marketplace. One of the things that struck me was their use of daily builds. What does a heartbeat involve? As a project leader I like being able to check the heartbeat every day. How many builds did we run? Did the last build pass? What areas of the code did we create or modify? Did they all pass?

Journeys of an IT heretic. Sunday, October 14, 2007. Time to start blogging again.and how about a sports analogy? The fact that Babe Ruth was probably pointing at the Cubs dugout in response to being jeered has been lost in time, because our nature wants us to believe in the hero rising above normal performance to perform incredible acts. Stories, broken down into tasks, solid estimating (relative for stories, detailed for iteration tasks), lightweight task and progress tracking, user buy-in to author th...

Sunday, November 6, 2016. I had a pound and a half of blueberries given to me the other day that were just begining to go bad. After removing a few bad ones, I still had almost the entire pound and a half. So now, what to do with them?
