Saturday, Aug 6 2016. The perils of summer in New England….A sketch of an unfortunate boating party caught out in a thunderstorm in an August night sometime around 1880. I rather like the turtle down at the corner! Monday, Feb 1 2016. The sun has burned the bars of the clouds and the sky has opened in the west. But the beauty of the life that is here in this evening will remain in God’s hand if nowhere else, the sparrow’s wings are no less glorious than the eagle’s. Tuesday, Dec 1 2015. Comments Off on C...

Thursday, Apr 30 2015. There are, of course, many things to keep one up at night. I don’t usually post about the house here, only the garden and the odd bit of history. That is mostly due to requests by various family members. The house is a nice house, a bit too sprawling perhaps with an eclectic interior. It has a lot of family heritage in it, quite complete. This place is nowhere near the size or grandeur of such places; but I feel a certain kinship to such people. What will happen to this place?

Pink Oak! «Acair Fearann Acair Fearann

Thursday, May 7 2015. No not ‘pin’. Actually, this is our baby white oak. A carefully found (that took a bit of doing thanks to the high deer population) offspring of the big white oaks down below the Royal Oak pasture. When I dug it up several years ago, it was about six inches tall with a tap root deeper than the shovel. Careful excavation was required. You will observe the fence and the white flag (deer repellent). A Garden for All. A Garden of Possibilities. Arthur in the garden. CT Street Tree list.

A bit over the top. Monday, May 11 2015. Last year the apple and crab-apple trees in this area failed almost completely. This year not so much. Intermezzo: the skunk just walked past…oh my God! Anyway, lovely smelling apple trees here:. You can see, bottom right, a bit of white? The little bit of pink is an azalea. For scale that building is a perfectly good story and a half. Where IS that skunk? A Garden for All. A Garden of Possibilities. Arthur in the garden. Exploring Nature in New Hampshire. Enter y...

Saturday, Apr 16 2016. Ambitious animals, those beavers! I can see you! Friday, Mar 11 2016. There were actually two of them, both good sized cows without collars or tags). About the same location where we saw an untagged cow moose last fall, so possibly the same ones. Unlike deer they are not flighty at all, quite content to stand and watch us and then go about their business. Friday, Dec 11 2015. Tuesday, Aug 11 2015. Comments Off on Yellow Pot. Saturday, May 9 2015. That crab-apple again and a window.

Thursday, Aug 18 2016. August is a hard time to have flowers around here: heat, sun, and humidity, combined with a short growing season knock out a lot of things. Most plants that like it in New England are designed to be done by late July, then there is a lull until September when the asters and goldenrods really explode. Monday, Aug 8 2016. Tuesday, Aug 2 2016. The garden has very much been on autopilot: too busy and the savagely dry weather (now broken) meant that trying to enjoy anything was rather h...
